Are you impressed? He'd be much better off to save all his change, although the article doesn't say what happens to his quarters, dimes, and nickels.
I usually deposit my pocket change twice a year and end up having $50 to $60 each time. By those numbers, I could save what this man saved in about 8 years.

Are pennies a good industry to get into right now?

It's a better idea to clandestinely save tons of pennies, then melt them down, separate the metals, and sell it off for scrap, because the penny is worth less than the scrap value of its metal; you need a huge quantity to cover the cost of melting and separation though, and I think Congress made this illegal to protect the integrity of the currency.

You can do this with nickels too.

^ uhh, pennies minted in the last 30 years aren't worth shit as they're almost all zinc. The older, mostly copper variety, is worth more than a penny, but even assuming 2 cents, good luck with making that remotely cost effective

edit: lol, quick google returns the value at "$0.0054052"

I usually deposit coins once or twice every year. Usually anywhere from $50-$70 each time I do it...which is just whenever my big cup of coins gets full.

Guy has been saving pennies his whole life and only got 800 bucks out of it.

This further reinforces my notion that pennies are worthless.

We will know the end is near for the penny when the mainland officially announces that newly minted pennies will not longer be provided to banks in Hawaii (or other outlying territories of the US) because the shipping cost no longer justifies the currency exchange.

When it becomes official that pennies are no longer to be used in one state, it will be the slippery slope to the end of using them altogether because, in spite of the use of copper plated zinc to protect their numismatic, nobody can argue that the unit is becoming increasingly obsolete.

The half cent coin was abolished in 1857, and we are overdue for another "abolition," except unlike the Civil War, this kind of abolition won't involve promoting the image of Abraham Lincoln.

i use cash so incredibly infrequently lately that I barely accumulate any change. The little bit I do get I keep in one of my cupholders in my car and have for years, without overflowing.
