So 20 years after the movie we get a TV show, however I am sad to say this one looks to have far less potential to pull off this Movie to TV Show dance (that is becoming popular) than Fargo has.
Obviously you can't judge an entire series based off the first episode, but it doesn't look like the most promising pilot I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the first episode, but with so many great series for comparison these days (True Detective, The Americans, Masters of Sex, etc.) it makes it hard to recommend a "good" TV Series (see "The Strain", although critics seemed to like it).
The good thing about SyFy (they made "Helix" series) making the show is they aren't so obsessed over a few point changes in their viewing numbers and ratings like FOX, CBS, etc. are. If these guys have already shot at least half the series, most likely they will finish it.
Also I imagine they paid Gilliam a hefty sum to do this and they want to give it a full shot before if/when pulling the plug. I wouldn't be surprised even if this season gets near the RT score it has now (61%, but only 18 Critic Reviews) that they come back and try to save it in Season 2.
Overall I'd say a middle ground between Critics (61) and Users (76) on RT ~69%

It's not bad, it's got potential. I'm definitely going to watch another episode 1/19/2015 9:50:51 AM |

I think it is worth watching at least the pilot and then see if you feel it has the potential that I and others feel it does. Don't expect to be blown away, but as Jeepin4x4 said I will be watching another episode at least. Normally I will give a new show that interest me at least 3-4 episodes before making the call. My exception to this being Gotham, which suddenly has gotten much better in Episode 10-11. One issue is you have a good bit of actors/actresses that aren't well known, if at all. I am hoping some of the acting improves and I need to see how much they changed the story after reading a little of:
"Syfy’s 12 Monkeys is nothing like Terry Gilliam’s film — and that’s why I’m interested "

Also there are some favorable reviews about the pilot (warning Spoilers on 1st episode):

Quote : | "It seemed like a totally preposterous idea: turn Terry Gilliam's weird, clever movie 12 Monkeys into an ongoing TV show. This seemed clearly doomed to suckitude. But in a totally implausible twist, the Monkeys show is actually surprisingly terrific. Spoilers ahead..." |
and then some "ok" ones like (again, spoilers):
