The type of person who eats Oreos isn't expecting it to taste like gourment Belgian chocolate here. There is an understanding that it is full of fat and chemicals. Its like going to McDonald's, you know it is bad for you but it it is tasty and satisfying. 1/21/2015 5:13:48 PM

the cookie will be flavored to taste like red velvet cake, rather than chocolate. also, the filling will be flavored to taste like cream cheese.
maybe I'm missing the point of the question, but this seems pretty clear to me. 1/21/2015 10:38:26 PM

^^For the most part. If they did it right the cookie should not taste identical to the regular one though.
I, for one, plan on trying them solely for the "cream cheese frosting" filling. It's going to be either really good or really bad, I think. 1/21/2015 11:50:45 PM

^^ OK not to know, but didn't you ever wonder what this "red velvet" flavor is? I mean, it is not the name of a natural flavor/ingredient/etc, so it never piqued your curiosity?
Red velvet is basically a con... it is very mild chocolate flavor (so mild you can't taste it) with loads of red food coloring. I wonder who came up with it, and using what thought process... "oh hey, let me make a chocolate cake, but add so little cocoa powder that you can't taste it, can't see the color of chocolate, so it's not a chocolate cake, and then throw in tons of red color, ummm, just because red is pretty".
And now many cupcake places have
Blue velvet Pink velvet Purple velvet Black velvet
cupcakes.

I wouldn't call myself a curious person, except as regards certain subjects (math, science, history) that I'm actually interested in. I don't have that universal passion for learning that some people possess.
also, I think it's fair to say that that passion is NOT an invariable, or even strongly correlated, accompaniment of being mathy/sciencey.
anyway, my curiosity does not extend to the composition of my food. there aren't too many things I'm less curious about, actually. but if I misunderstood the purpose of your question, I apologize. 1/22/2015 12:48:59 PM

omfg 1 tbsp vinegar... yeah, that defines the cake right there. (i know what it is supposed to do)
you don't need to be an expert in "red velvet cake" to know that a whole red velvet cake only has 3 tbsp cocoa powder and shit tons of red color, and oh yeah, 1 tbsp vinegar (lol). as i said in my post you quoted, it is a red cake with a mostly not noticeable chocolate taste.
so yeah, stfu. 2/7/2015 9:17:03 PM

good idea-- yes.
How do you create a transient, niche product, and get consumers to go rabid about it? Create a synthetic perception of scarcity.
Go after the collective FOMO that our society has. It works well with this and other limited release oreo flavors. It works with girl scout cookies (Keebler and others make knockoffs that taste no different and are available year-round), seasonal beers (I will admit that I am a sucker for limited release beers), small batch liquors (guilty here also) and other products that can command a higher profit margin simply by manufacturing some scarcity around it.
Now that i'm off my high horse, I'm going to go find some BOFA. 2/8/2015 10:10:35 AM

Oreos are rarely ever a bad idea
they don't have much to lose anyway (from a business stand point)
I had some Red Velvet cookies the other day that had white chocolate chunks in them
I didn't think they'd be good at all, but they ended up being delicious :3
