I've always felt that this generation of golfers had a lot of great personalities. They were just missing the villain (maybe other than Tiger). So, it looks like Patrick Reed has stepped into that role. This is a really pretty good article about his time in college:

Glad Rory came along to supplant Tiger and actually put another real star on the PGA tour. Mickelson is too old to do anything magical and Tiger is just falling apart now. I'll still root for Phil and American players over Rory, but at least Rory is worth watching week in and week out. Hopefully he will play more in the US this year.

I'm OK with this. Captain doesn't mean much, it's more about the players.

I don't like it.

It should have been Freddy. He has plenty of experience from 3 president's cups and DLIII already had his shot which ended in an epic collapse after the Euros frontloaded sunday in the singles. Not to mention that Freddy is a player's coach kind of guy and could help set the tone for the Americans. I also feel like Couples would have made some really good picks for his slots because he could care less what anyone else thinks.

The PGA of America is gonna have some explaining to do if Love doesn't bring the cup back.

Golf needs more heads up match play. Decrease the PGA field or something. Make it a closer head to head every week like we had with Tiger, Phil, Sergio and a few random others not so many years back. That was when Golf was great as of late.

I like the tour as much as I did before - my lone gripe, and it may be unfounded as it's early in the season, is that the tournament load for top players seems to be lesser than before.

I'm all for the youth movement, I think the average tour guy now is much better than the average tour guy 10 years ago making it more competitive, but I just wish there were 20% less tournaments and more of a stacked field when tourneys did happen.

With that being said, I'm hoping Rory gets some consistent competition. I love a strong field, but I like player-to-player rivalries.

28 foot putt to win in a playoff for Speith. He's really fun to watch when he is on like that.

because Lonnie Poole has a new fully-functioning restaurant/kitchen at the new clubhouse and they don't need to contract out to a 3rd party vendor anymore?

just guessing

Tried to get tickets (given that I live in Augusta) but I'm not willing to pay 5x what they're worth.

^Sounds like he missed a couple putts as well, so he could have scored even lower.

Whats the consensus on Tiger? Is he done for the year, or will he just be playing majors?

^hell, just unleash them all at the same time like NASCAR qualifying. Give them all different colored balls like in putt putt. Make some sort of formula where you combine strokes with minutes played to get the winner.

Quite possibly the best sunday of golf I've ever seen.

So many guys making great shots at each other instead of someone backing their way into victory. Proud of Rickie for breaking through that big tourney barrier. American golf is about to be good shape with all these young guys winning big early.

He straight up topped his second shot on 18 and the crowd started laughing. It's hard to watch at this point. Somebody just needs to take him out back and put him down already.

The leaderboard is stacked with good players. This weekend is going to be a thriller I believe because nobody's running away with the greens as bad as they are. Gotta favor the scramblers once everything dries out.

so Fox's coverage of the first round was pretty garbage, I felt like I was watching more of the analysts at the desk than actual golf.

I pulled up the app on my amazon fire and watched the feature group, which was a lot more enjoyable (besides the fact that Tiger, Rickie and Oost were floundering around the course).

the discussion about poa annua on the greens fascinates me. really unlike anything these guys play on throughout the season. but like Greg Norman (or somebody) said, these guys are all playing the same course, so there's no need for any golfer to bitch about the greens being unfair

I thought they had some great camera angles set up to really give you a feel for what the players were facing and give the audience at home a good idea of how the property is structured. I also loved that they used shotlink much, much more than your average tour event. IMO that's going to take watching golf to the next level for the casual fan.

However I do agree with your comments. It felt like they were doing a dress rehearsal where nobody actually had a clear cut idea what their role in the whole thing was. Once they get those wrinkles ironed out though FOX will have a really good broadcast.

Let's all take a second and smile that Johnny F'in Miller isn't calling it either. That guy is a raging cunt.

^ I kept wondering why Buck was saying that, because the course has only one type of grass. The tee boxes, fairways, and greens are all fescue. I was hoping somebody would correct him.

poa annua is a nasty weed. relatively impossible to keep under control without absolutely torching the fescue. the greens would be brown and crispy if they tried and even more guys would be bitching

Followed both "Featured Group" coverage sessions and thought it was fine: the announcers were amusing and I enjoyed some of the deadpanned puns. They lost some coverage at times (switching to an odd camera view), but I liked the emphasis on the player's perspective, more use of shot-tracer (especially on Bubba Watson's tee shots), and, it seemed, much better sense of slopes/angles compared to standard NBC/CBS.

Natalie Gulbis isn't my favorite on course commentator: something about her voice grates.

For what little it's worth, the background music was pretty cool. Certainly beats the "ballad of Jim Nance."

Anyone else catch Dustin Johnson's "chip" on 9 (his 18th) and the subsequent roll? That was slick. I think the ball about traced out a capital omega shape.
