Gott was on my flight to DC yesterday. I said to him "good luck against UVA, I think we can win!" and he looked sullenly at the floor and said "thanks". True story.

I really hate when people say "I'd rather beat them at full strength". Of course that would be better, but I'll take beating them when they're missing one of their better players any day.

He's their best 3-point shooter. Since that's what has been killing us during this stretch, it definitely raises the level of hope.

I read on PP that he's supposedly been banged up and battling a knee injury for a few weeks. Hopefully he's healed up some over the long break.

Would be nice to get Lacey going in this one. He struggled the first time around. Overall I actually feel pretty good about this game.

Brogdin is their most important player, but Anderson can burn you from deep or driving the lane. Glad he's out. They're still the #3 team in the nation, and we really need some wins.

Wonder if we'll stick with the small lineup this game. We played small almost the whole 2nd half against Wake and scored 54 points.

Pack Pride had a premium story posted about the small lineup but I couldn't read it. I'm all for it. Makes us more versatile and harder to guard.

"Should the Wolfpack play small ball even more? Part of me believes that's the route they should look to take.

First of all, we know college basketball is a guard's game. It's about having playmakers and shooters because with the way it's being officiated it's tougher and tougher for non-elite frontcourt scorers to consistently produce on a given night.

Watching the Wake Forest game back, I wonder if that's part of NC State's problems offensively. The Wolfpack came out and a majority of their early plays were sets run out of the UCLA High Post offense. There was a concerted effort to try and get Kyle Washington and Abdul-Malik Abu going early on. When it works (see the start of Miami) that's great but what happened Tuesday night is what it looks like when it doesn't work.

State's big men aren't getting dunks/layups out of these sets... they are getting high post/mid-range looks or block touches. Those aren't easy versus packed-in/converging defenses. Abu, Washington, and BeeJay Anya were 2-for-11 in the first half at Wake Forest. Lennard Freeman was 2-for-2 and one of those was an offensive putback. Abu had five shot attempts in seven minutes and just one of those shots came off an offensive rebound.

The Wolfpack scored 30 points and shot 31% from the field. Granted, Ralston Turner and Trevor Lacey weren't much better (1-for-9), but shouldn't the big men be more efficient then guards, given the shots they should be taking?

In the second half, NC State's four big men combined to go 3-for-4 from the field. Overall, the offense scored 54 points and shot 50% from the field. The three starting guards combined to go 13-for-27 and scored 38 points.

What was the difference? State played faster and were able to play faster because they downsized and went small. Anya, Washington, Abu, and Freeman COMBINED for 22 minutes in the second half. In the first half they played 40 combined minutes (i.e. State played two bigs the entire half). The lone big was used more as a screener for shooters... which is what most teams do with their big men.

My belief is Gottfried often uses the first half to find out if his big men are going to be effective as scorers and then looks to adjust accordingly, but is doing so wasting chances to get his better scorers involved earlier?

We asked Gottfried after the game if he'd consider starting a small lineup.

"Yeah, maybe, but it is tough defensively too," he said. "It depends on who you’re playing against and how you’re going to guard somebody. We’ve traditionally played with two big guys and with the way Wake plays Mitoglou and even Leonard sometimes, it puts us at a little bit of a disadvantage because we have got a forward chasing those guys around the three-point line.

"Now the answer is if you go down on offense and punish them, then it is good. But if you are bad offensively and you are at a disadvantage defensively, it is time to make a change. That is what we did at half. I said, 'I am not playing that anymore. I have seen enough of that.'

"We will see. We will look at it."

I definitely think they should, not only look at playing smaller earlier, but also de-emphasizing the big men offensively. You don't have to take them completely out of the equation, but use them more as screener/rollers/rebounders offensively than post-up/elbow scorers. Maybe it's just me, but no shot angers me more than a mid-range jumper from a big without another under the basket.

Why not come out early and try to establish your best scorers (Lacey, Turner, and Barber) and let the big men get in the flow of the game and pick their spots?

It's probably hard to make such a radical change based off what may seem like one game, but I believe if they are going to get it rolling they have to try and play faster offensively and use Barber/Lacey as penetrators to open up their bigs around the rim for easier shots and Turner/Martin's for easier shots.

I get it, you may be in a bind defensively, but really does it matter at this point? NC State's not a great team defensively now.

Look at Notre Dame. They aren't good defensively and play small because they know it makes them that much harder to guard offensively. Doing so has allowed them to become an elite offensive team. I believe they played two big men last season and were No. 55 in offensive efficiency. They now play Connaughton at the four and are No. 1 in offensive efficiency.

He's 6'5 and a matchup problem for traditional forwards... which I think could be the case for Cody and Caleb.

I'm sure it's something that NC State will explore this week in practice... Gottfried said as much after the Wake loss.

Either way, they need to find something that works, and fast... tourney hopes are fading."

go small early. Keep the bigs out of foul trouble and maybe they can grab some crucial rebounds late.

Good coaches are able to see what their teams strengths and weaknesses are and adapt accordingly. We have seen time and again we are not a great defensive team so it would make sense to concentrate on scoring the ball and if we lose in a shootout then so be it. We cant continue to wait until we are down 20 at halftime to make these adjustments. Both Clemson and Wake we made the comeback but we were put in such a big hole it just took too much energy to makeup the difference and we couldnt finish it down the stretch. If you wanna see how things go give it 10 minutes tops and if its not working make the change then before the game is too far out of reach.

We have the talent and depth to press all game. I wish we did that against the wake forests and clemsons. Come out against a team we are better than and attempt to beat them by 30.

clearly you all have forgotten how NC State athletics work

we're going to beat the shit out of UVA tonight, and spend the rest of the week congratulating ourselves for being in great shape to make the tournament with 2 Top 5 wins

then we'll lose out the rest of the regular season and take ourselves right back to NIT land

This year -- 1-1, so it's a draw!

^Looks like we lost our only game against Clemson last year.

L wearing them at UNC in 2012-2013 season. I'm sure we wore them last year, but I can't easily find it.

L against Miami last year.

We won at home against Clemson in the 2012-2013 season wearing black. Night before MLK Day IIRC.

I liked the black jerseys we wore in Gott's first season the most (other than the fact that when we wore them at Cameron we blew that huge lead).
