i was a waitress and a bartender for a long time. tipping is like penis size, there is no definitive way to know when you'll get a big one.

When I was a bartender I did not notice any "black people don't tip" trend. Foreigners, though, did not tip, particularly Europeans.

On the list of priorities that is the LOWEST thing

Getting your food order right > Time in Getting the food out >>> Promptly addressing you and taking your order >>>>>>> how quickly you deliver the check

Or

(1) Getting the order right
(2) Timely getting out the order
(3) promptly addressing you and seating you
(4) promptness in delivering the check


That is REAL priorities. I call bullshit. Those mugs just didn't want to tip and were looking for an excuse.

If I'm obviously done with a meal (napkins in plates, empty glasses, etc.) and have been waiting for the check so I can leave and go about my day/evening/whatever, it would be a high priority to receive my check in a timely fashion and it would certainly affect the tip given. It is frustrating to be stuck at a restaurant when your server doesn't give you a means to pay.

I'm going to forego a tip to inspire you to demand a real wage. It's not the patrons job to pay a restaurants workers. I'd gladly pay 15% more for my food if I no longer have to consider tipping.

Well there is actually a huge flipside argument. The server may have actually thought they were wealthy and were the types to flaunt it.

Many servers will perform outstandingly and then let a "high roller" table languish so that they are compelled to slap down a benjamin or two (for whatever the tab is) and then GTFO.

Maybe the other people ate faster than that guy did. Notice he didn't say they waited too long for the check, only that the people who got the check first arrived after he did. Lots of different reasons that could happen that have nothing to do with bad service or holding someone too long after they are obviously done with their meal.

How many tables can a good waiter work concurrently on a busy Friday or Saturday night? 4? Say it's a chain where, after appetizers, drinks and the meal, you're looking at 50 for a couple. That is $10 worth of tip. At 4 tables, and assuming that all four tables are there for about an hour, that's $42 an hour!! What other non-union unskilled labor makes that kind of cash, besides stripping?

I need a place that sells mattresses for a good price and isn't overly priced in Raleigh. And offer finance options that doesn't do credit checks. I went to the place by Ollies in Cary and was great but if I could find something a little bit cheaper would be great. It's a king and they had it for 629. I just need the mattress only. My super liberal Race/Relations professor who taught Statistics at Central explained it to the class...and it's kinda deeply shameful/embarrassing for some black folks and white folks and folks of all races....

I've quietly explained tipping to people of all races, but seriously, it's a math problem. Fuck all this nonsense about how the waitress is racist because she's predicting a bad tip...she/he's a fucking server...they don't smoke three cigarettes while your meal gets cold on purpose.

Europeans do not have our tipping system. They have standard wages that people earn just as they would at any other job.

Not to beat at a dead horse, but in my experience the service is typically worlds better in the US than in Europe.

sure, but they don't just work busy friday and saturday nights. there are plenty of times that they are at work rolling silverware and shit and not getting many tables...or worse yet, come in, have no tables for a couple of hours, and then get cut and sent home without making any money.
