In an unrelated story, a disgruntled Shaw grad is now trying his hand at hack journalism. Friends report he has released what he calls his own proprietary "ranking system" in various internet outlets. 3/6/2015 5:13:33 PM

The $150,000 loss on investment over 20 years for Shaw is downright scary. 3/6/2015 6:52:45 PM

It's interesting that you didn't include winston-salem state or a&t in that list. considering they were in much better spots than shaw or central. 3/6/2015 10:42:53 PM

^What spots were they for this ranking business, and why do you think he neglected to include them?

iirc, cddweller went to Shaw
she's the only person I've even heard of had anything whatsoever to do with Shaw University. if it weren't for her, I wouldn't even know the place existed.
however, it is kinda neat to learn that the absolute worst university for your money is located in Raleigh, NC 3/6/2015 11:33:25 PM

more that there are lots of nc universities and then the two hbcu's here are terribly ranked. the ones i listed were in the middle (wssu is 695 and a&t is 529) 3/7/2015 12:39:50 PM

Yes, for undergraduate studies, A&T > Central quite obviously to anyone who doesn't have an allegiance.
But a lot of our HBCUs are legitimately struggling. They have trouble getting talented students since those students now go to "regular" universities, and they can't do the necessary fundraising to keep their finances in check. It's sad, in some ways, but times are changing...they're gonna have to figure something out. Schools can't hang around just cause they used to be historically significant.
I mean, I generally regard Shaw University as a prep school. It's not a bad thing necessarily, and as long they're doing what's required, they can retain their University status, but nobody should pony up to go there under the impression that it's a normal university. And we could raise some questions about federal aid and whether or not they should be able to benefit from it. They're legit--not like those bullshit places that advertise on TV--but there's an issue there.
