A good friend of mine (incidentally, one I met many years ago on TCW) gave me some devastating news on Friday - her 10 month old daughter died Friday afternoon (was found "unresponsive" in her crib by babysitter.

The grief she and her family are feeling is unimaginable. I'm flying out there on Mon. Not sure what I should do/offer to do aside from just showing up at the services. I obviously don't want her feel obligated to spend any time with me, but would like to offer taking her for a coffee or something, or offering to clean their house or something while I'm there. They also have a 3.5 year old daughter.

I read this "How to respond to grieving people" article a long time ago (by people who'd suffered death of a child, I believe) and they mentioned that they always appreciating hearing "I can't imagine what you're going through" (as opposed to "I know what you're going through.") This is probably obvious, and as you used the term "unimaginable" you were probably going to say something of this nature; but, maybe worth mentioning.

Also, that sucks.
