I'm not saying that and I'm not advocating being reckless, and no, my daughter was not planned (*not by me, anyway).

I'm just saying that if you got HIV as a straight white male, the doc would be like "OK, so was it dirty needles, gay buttsex, or nailing hookers?" It's not impossible or anything, but AIDS is statistically not something that afflicts straight white non-IV drug-using men with any sort of frrwuency at all.

First gf (14-17 y.o) we used condoms for like a few weeks. Maybe a month. Then 2ish years without.
2nd gf (18-20) I don't know that we ever did use condoms. She had some shot, didn't have her period the entire time we dated.
3rd gf (22-26) never used condoms. She is vigilant about taking her pills.
4th gf (27-30 now) only used a condom once when the doctor told us we had to.. We have a 1 year old

Ok sure. You would be correct that infectious contagion is calculated using epidemiological formulae so as to measure an outbreak rate from patient zero within a virtual statistical certainty. Certain terms such as "viral load" of the body fluids carrying the virus are industry standard.

It is 2015.

Yes there is still a lot we do not know and medical science is evolving. Doctors also know that patients hate this topic. What I found somewhat surprising is that doctors actually hate this topic too. They are just human and they are also scared as shit about this topic sometimes.

Becoming family friends with a doctor and finally asking real world questions opened up a whole world to me. He told me how he had to operate on a patient who had HIV and of course my first question was: what was it like sticking your hand inside that person's body and handling their body and blood? He factually stated with medical professionalism: well obviously we are concerned to avoid needle-sticks (I guess doctor slang for poking yourself with a needle and breaching barriers so you could expose yourself to infection)

Anyway doctors are fucking heroes. I do not know how they do what they do.

But then you also learn how fucked up a lot of them are, but that is a different topic....and yes they also smoke and do drugs and bang hookers and fuck their patients

I really only worried about pregnancy and herpes...and only seriously about herpes. I didn't worry about pregnancy for two reasons:

(1) Pretty much every one night stand (or booty call) I had involved me being fairly intoxicated. While I could get and keep it up, I almost never bust a nut if I was heavily drinking.

(2) 99% of the girls I knew were on birth control. Combine that with (1)...and I never had any pregnancy scares.

Herpes (and other common STDs) was a legitimate scare. While it doesn't prevent it, I did get tested sporadically throughout my young adult hook-up spree. Several girls I talked to did the same. I was under (the highly misguided) assumption that a lot of people I was hooking up with were hopefully responsible like me and were also getting tested. Regardless, I do think I dodged a bullet with being largely STD free. I say largely, because I'm sure I have HPV, as does a majority of the sexually active population.

AIDS has never crossed my mind before or after getting my dick wet.


Just to add to this narrative...in the beginning of my post-collegiate promiscuity...in the beginning I often either (a) had a condom or would (b) say "umm..I don't have a condom". 99% of the time the girl was anti-condom.

Patch after first kid (worked great until we stopped using it to have another and she was pregnant again in less than a month) and then Mirena IUD ever since. Shit is FTW. yeah same here. I always intended to use protection in college. occasionally I did. Mostly I didn't. If it was a one-night stand, I almost always pulled out.

I only trusted birth control when I was in a relationship and thus had reason to trust her word (and be aware of how fastidious she was about taking that shit).

HIV was never a real concern. Statistically, it was unlikely that I'd end up with that chick who had HIV, and even if I did, infection after a one-night stand is as probable as winning the lottery. Sure, it happens to some people, but it ain't gonna be you. Herpes and HPV was a more legitimate risk, and I'll just say I'm fortunate I didn't end up with that life partner. All the other common STIs are curable with antibiotics, so didn't worry too much.

Honestly, my biggest problem was caring way too fucking much about what my friends thought about who I hooked up with. I turned down so many sure things because of bullshit standards or dumbass labels that certain girls had among friends. One of my buddies would fuck any girl that was willing. He caught a lot of shit from people (including me), but he owned it and would always say something like-- I got laid, did you? In hindsight, he was the smart one.
The reality is, and I discovered this far too late, how conventionally attractive a girl appears has very little to do with how good in the sack she might be.

You're talking at an individual level. Sure, if a white male non drug user has sex with a white female non-drug user/non-prostitute with HIV, he could catch it. What I'm saying is that AIDS in developed countries is overwhelmingly a disease of gay/bi men, IV drug users, and prostitutes, and to a lesser extent, black people. You could get unlucky as a straight white male who doesn't bang hookers or shoot smack, but you'd have to be really, really, extraordinarily unlucky. The severity is extremely high, but the odds are vanishingly low. Like BobbyDigital said, it's like wining the lottery. Could be you, but it ain't gonna be.
