people in these professions complain about their jobs more than anyone else. If they are that unhappy, why dont they find another job?

It goes back to salary.
Can't afford a respectable person then the whole field loses respect and the few who hung on for the right reasons get constantly beat down.

All educators or a specific subset?
I would agree all HS teachers are unhappy. 4/29/2015 9:00:23 AM

College professors seemed unhappy too. I met maybe 2-3 that actually gave a fuck about their students. 4/29/2015 9:02:39 AM

I would say a college professor's level of happiness is directly correlated to their area of expertise.
I can't imagine grabbing a drink with an accounting instructor, for example. 4/29/2015 9:47:32 AM

I dated a teacher for a while. Every single day, she would complain about her job, for at least 30 minutes. 4/29/2015 10:18:51 AM

^Buddy of mine had the same issue but it was his girlfriend that had just graduated college (teachers fellows). She only lasted 4 months as a teacher, ![](images/crack.gif) 4/29/2015 10:20:24 AM

answer: because everything they are asked to do is offset by the threat of a lawsuit from someone who doesn't get their way as a result of the officer/teacher trying to do his/her job. also, pay cuts for more productivity.

At least for me -- and I hardly ever complain -- it's that the little things that bother you are beyond your control and the amazing parts don't really translate. My kids don't bother me. Parents do. 4/29/2015 11:23:01 AM

I work in education, but I don't complain too much about my job. All things considered, I've got it pretty good. Grading papers is horrible, but the rest of it is fun. 4/29/2015 11:43:10 AM

Administrators are also horrible; specifically their quest to quantify success in a million inane ways. 4/29/2015 11:52:13 AM

Grading is the worst. I love being able to read my kids' thoughts and get a feel for their understanding of the lessons, but assigning numerical grades to every thing takes forever and is so tedious.
I always look at administrators as being tied up in the system themselves. The county requires data, and they're forced to solicit data from their PLTs. 4/29/2015 12:09:23 PM

they like certain parts about job X (where X = "police offer," "educator") tremendously, and perhaps they even regard X as their natural calling. so they don't quit
but they think (I'm guessing) that X's suffer a lot of administrative/bureaucratic bullshit injustice, and also don't get paid enough.
basically, it's like staying in a bad relationship. their lover might be a piece of shit in certain important ways, but despite that, they feel they'll probably never love anyone else.

Yeah, but.... thats like 90% of workers everywhere.
That love aspects of their job, hate aspects of their job, and feel they dont get paid enough. 4/29/2015 12:45:49 PM

yeah, that's true of course. but I suspect that educators/police officers put up with more bullshit, and do it for less pay, than is the case with most fields.
also, it's probably MUCH easier to "love" being an educator/police officer than it is to love most professions. These are jobs where it's very natural to be passionate about your work.

I hear you. I just...I just think that everyone does some cost-benefit analysis for their job. If the benefit is greater, they stick with their job and smile through the bullshit. If the cost is greater, they leave for greener pastures. I think that if most people complained as much as educators or law enforcement did, people would eventually say "stop being a whiny cunt. Either stay or go. Those are your two options". I have not quite convinced myself that certain professions should be exempt. 4/29/2015 1:07:28 PM

yes, I agree with your fundamental premise. and certain people who work in thankless but vital professions may perhaps be pardoned for griping a bit more, but too much is too much, so etc.
basically, I have no dealings with educators/police officers, so I'm not really qualified to comment on this phenomenon. generally, though, I'd probably agree with you: don't persistently whine about shit you're capable of changing. (or shit you can't change, for that matter.) 4/29/2015 1:20:00 PM

Friends wife is a middle school teacher and is totally like this. She is constantly complaining about students, parents, administrators, the Legislature, and her paycheck. Her family is loaded and she travels abroad once or twice a year, often on mom and dads dime, yet she is forever bitching about not having money.
Ironically my friend (her husband) is a former cop. He used to really like his job, but is no longer a LEO. He is happier now out of law enforcement, but he never really bitched about it. Additionally my sousins boyfriend is a long time detective and he never really has a bad thing to say about anybody or anything. He's laid back as hell and I've heard him talk about shitty people he had to deal with in the line of duty, but never said like "my job sucks" or anything like that. He barely brings it up and is more interested in talking fishing, but if I mention a criminal he helped apprehend he will tell you about it, both the good and the bad. But honestly most of the cops I know aren't that bad. And most teachers aren't too bad (hell I used to work at a school district) but I have a few that whine and bitch IRL and on social media.
