The admins banned the 150,000-subscriber subreddit /r/fatpeoplehate, and a few others.

It wasn't just fat shaming. They allow all kinds of really hateful stuff on that site, provided the "behavior" is kept within the sub.
Basically you can call someone fat without an issue, but doxxing someone, or posting to that person's personal blog as a member of the sub is discouraged.

r/Fatpeoplehate was the only sub I was familiar with and it was pretty despicable. They would regularly harass other bloggers to the point where it was clear that this community was behind it. So they were banned.
There's plenty of other fat shaming subs, but the mods of those places know enough to keep the drama contained.

Its probably a little foreign to most of TWW, since some of the greatest accolades of this site have been the targeted manipulation of other sites/people by its members (New14, Flick, Ian Dunne).

It's a sad commentary on our society that racist subreddits, and subreddits about rape are okay, but a subreddit that points out that Tess Holiday is a terrible role model and endorses an unhealthy lifestyle are not

being a prick is worse than being fat by a long shot. and a lot of that subreddit was worse than just being a prick. death threats, needlessly hateful comments that spilled out to the rest of redit, etc. truly pathetic and their backlash is hilariously childish. I hope they get rid of more.

Obesity isn't a protected class, but sex is. Gender discrimination is prevalent on reddit, and nothing is done. Why are they now pulling anything that mentions the drain on society that fat people really are?

because those subreddits keep to themselves. FPH was spilling over to r/all and other subreddits. there are many accounts of them harassing specific users, taking pictures from weight loss progress threads, anorexia survivors, etc. Its disgusting and you're disgusting for defending them.

I'm sure more subreddits will follow.

But you know you can block what subreddits show up on your feed right? I don't subscribe to subs I don't want to see. I find plenty of subs offensive, so I don't look at them. I don't think I should have any ability to take away their ability to hate monger amongst themselves though. I never subscribed to FPH, and I never saw their posts pop up on my reddit front page. You should try it sometime.

the only "harassment" of users i ever saw in FPH was towards social justice warriors who came into the subreddit to troll people, i never saw any harassment of an innocent overweight person. the only progress pics i saw anyone make fun of are progress pics where a large amount of time passes and the person looks the same or heavier and someone captions it with "apparently it takes 6 months to put on a hat" or some shit like that and that kind of hilarious shitlording doesn't come close to the other kinds of reprehensible behavior that reddit has no problem with.

You can block it, but it doesn't excuse the fact that they were attacking innocent individuals on a regular basis, going so far as sending anorexia survivors PMs telling them they should die. With 157k subscribers, the attitude was spilling out all over reddit (eg. "Spotted the fatty" comments). Reddit is still a place for relatively unrestricted speech, but that doesn't mean it should be a haven for malicious bigots to grow their cause.

Its not just FPH that was banned, it just happens to be the largest (pun intended) and most noticeable.

I think they were more concerned about subreddits becoming the epicenter for bullying and harassment than the overall intention of the sub. There are other fat-shaming subs, including r/fatlogic (which went private to avoid the influx of trolls that the FPH ban has released) that are still active and in no danger.

And FPH required you to subscribe to comment in their sub, making it pretty easy to distinguish who the FPH folks were and who the random users were.

Apparently they were pretty bad about brigading too, which a lot of other subreddit's do, its just a lot harder to catch.

Honestly I don't see why they don't just all move over to 4chan. Its not like there isn't a number of forums out there that don't regulate as heavily as reddit.

The basic rule for subs is "You can scream racist slurs all you want inside your home, but if you step out on the front lawn and scream it at passerby's then you're gonna have a bad time."

Brigading is voting in mass.

Basically someone goes to r/makeupaddiction and makes a comment like "Wow, what a fat tard"

Normally that would get downvoted into oblivion pretty quick and never be seen.

BUT

If the FPH squad sees it then they can all go and upvote that comment, making it #1 pretty easily. So now someone posting in an unrelated sub has a bunch of "fatty" comments at the top of their submission. Since only a few people made comments like that, you can't really call it a FPH invasion, but the hundreds of upvotes for those comments would indicate brigading.

If I follow correctly, one of the main reasons fatpeoplehate was banned from reddit is that they were harassing and borderline doxxing imgur administrators.
