What would you say are some of the unspoken "rules" to a GoFundMe campaign? I've seen many people that start accounts for families that just lost a family member to help pay for expenses, and those seems to greatly surpass the needed amount. However, I've seen a couple, specifically a guy that wanted to raise money to take his three daughters on a vacation since they've all graduated from high school and he has never been able to afford to take them on one. He has been running this campaign for over a month and hasn't raised a dime.
So it's looking like you either have to be sick or dead to get money, but raising money for a luxury pretty much won't happen.
What are your thoughts? 6/8/2015 5:20:06 PM |

my boss said her daughter in law did this to raise money for a move to California to pursue her lifelong dream of being an actress (she's like 45) and raised $80 or so in three months.
people aren't going to give you their hard earned money for bullshit like that or vacation. sick and dying get funded like you said. if you have a real idea, get a kickstarter. 6/8/2015 5:31:30 PM |

e-panhandling
unless you've had something horrible happen to you like a car accident, natural disaster, gotten laid off, or you need money to help pay for medical costs, all you're going to get from me is either a "fuck off" or an LOL. 6/8/2015 5:40:50 PM |

What would y'all think if someone was going on there to help fund education expenses? It's not necessarily luxury like a vacation or moving, but it's also not really a necessity. 6/8/2015 6:19:02 PM |

i'd tell them to suck it up and take out student loans like the rest of us adults who didn't have mommy/daddy paying our way through life.

Sick, dying, need help for school, potential to go out of business (due to no fault of your own), or dead.
Good examples I've seen: Hospice care needed Cancer Hospital bills Car accident destroyed business (food truck)
Bad examples: racists funding other racists people raising money for vacations 6/8/2015 6:37:29 PM |

For me, the only "rule" is that you have to be honest. However, if your cause sucks, then no one is going to donate to it (unless it's really, really witty). 6/8/2015 6:44:45 PM |

It also seems like you earn more if you do a campaign for someone else too. Don't set up a fund for yourself or you look selfish, but if someone else does it for you it seems like you deserve it more because at least one other people thinks you need help. 6/8/2015 7:09:08 PM |

I remember someone posting about a ludicrous GoFundMe campaign a while ago, and I wondered whether there was some blog out there collecting the most lol-worthy efforts. 6/10/2015 1:10:15 PM |

Here's a Canadian who decided to go to an American law school despite having no way to pay for it, managed to convince that school to let her attend classes while figuring out how to come up with the money, and then got kicked out after three semesters of those shenanigans, so now she's asking for $150k on gofundme (I gave a lengthy, insightful comment, which got deleted): http://www.gofundme.com/r35nnc
Here's a more typical example (summer camp for her son, no donations for a month): http://www.gofundme.com/u9s7dg 6/10/2015 3:59:13 PM |

That is so crazy!
I don't really love how those companies take money off the top of the campaign. So your friends who spend money, granted, it's tax deductable, end up paying the for-profit companies.
my two cents. 7/2/2015 5:10:29 PM |
