Sometimes driving ranges will have used sets for sale. I was able to get a really nice set that way.

Possibly a consignment/pawn shop?

^^ My thoughts are that as a beginner you don't need to spend a ton of money. Look for a "game improvement" set and lean towards a set that include 3/4/5 hybrids as they're easier for us to hit consistently than their iron counterparts.

I like my Taylor Made Burner 2.0s, for example.

Go to golfsmith and hit some of their used clubs to see if you find a set you like...then bu them on ebay or something

I agree with synapse. For my first set I went with the Callaway X2 Hot series. The irons are GI. The driver is adjustable as far as degree of loft and draw/fade. For fairway woods only bought a 3 wood. If I feel the need for a 5 wood later I can always get one. I also went with the typical Odyssey 2 ball mallet putter. Bag not included I think I only spent $700 total on the set. Like you I did not want to spend very much on a first set incase I end up not being interested in the sport.

I inherited my grandfathers clubs and I finally played my first round in 2010. Shot a 99 that day. The clubs are WAYYYY to short for me, then got another hand me down set which is a little better. I was given a great hybrid, driver, putter and I mainly use those three along with pitching and sand wedge. Now I constantly shoot bogey/double bogey. I assume like the OP if I got a better set, went to the range more, and had a better set I could get in the 80's constantly?

I have some ping eye 2 red dots I would be willing to part with. They are old technology but easy to hit and cheap now.

^ I was actually going to recommend red dots. Theyre older now but damn good clubs. That was my first "nice" set of irons and I absolutely loved them. Very easy to hit.

^ I'd seriously consider these if you're looking for a beginner set, very old set of clubs but a good lie angle for taller people with the red dot and a set of irons that are extremely hard to find.

I'm 5'9" and the red dots were perfect for me. These are the square groove club heads that are pga illegal. They have old tour velvet grips that I never regripped because they stay tacky. Very forgiving club for a beginner.

yeah all mine are my dad's old one and set for a 5'6" dude..

one set is the pings that were outlawed for a bit.
