Meh kinda. I feel like these "groundbreaking" discoveries are announced every few months anyway. Yes, it is very important in very specialized fields but not what I would consider groundbreaking. Even if it was exactly like Earth, the one they found is like 1400 light years away so its not like we could even send a signal there within reasonable time. 7/23/2015 1:38:04 PM |

^^ they've been there 3 billion years longer than earth, they could have found us a long time ago, and had been sending signals.
They could have been sending signals, and stopped after we never responded. 7/23/2015 1:43:20 PM |

I think its highly likely intelligent life could have existed there and then died out long before Earth had life of any significant sorts. 7/23/2015 2:28:43 PM |

this should be in the lounge.
anyway, per Reddit comments from /u/meatthattalks and /u/ballisstlife
Quote : | "It's the smallest exoplanet discovered to date discovered orbiting in the habitable zone of a G2-class star, just like the Earth and the Sun.
Kepler-452b is 60 percent larger in diameter than Earth and is considered a super-Earth-size planet.
It's likely rocky.
While Kepler-452b is larger than Earth, its 385-day orbit is only 5 percent longer. The planet is 5 percent farther from its parent star Kepler-452 than Earth is from the Sun. Kepler-452 is 6 billion years old, 1.5 billion years older than our sun, has the same temperature, and is 20 percent brighter and has a diameter 10 percent larger. The Kepler-452 system is located 1,400 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus.
NASA also said that the planet is likely to have lots of clouds and possibly active volcanoes
They also said that it receives about 10% more energy than the earth does because of the proximity and age of the nearby star, I think this would mean it would have a little bit of a higher temperature
Also since it is 6 billion years old there is way more time than we have had on Earth for life to have developed given the chance
They are confident that the planet has an atmosphere but they have no idea of its composition" |
For clarity, Kepler-452 is the star, and Kepler-452b is the planet7/23/2015 3:15:21 PM |

Life isnt on earth solely because our star and position relative to it. Theres at least a half dozen more huge things that had to go exactly right before intelligent could develop on earth. So many corcumstances could hace easily prevented/exterminated complex life early on. We are lucky. With all that said theres still enough out there to have intelligent life despite the extremely low probability 7/23/2015 3:18:35 PM |

China probably will claim it, claiming it belongs to China based on historical records right shoot?

I thought the next closest star of a solar system was ~40,000 light years. I don't know where I got that from, though.
1,400 light years is like a stroll down the block.

Yo LastInACC I'm in building 4600 right across the street from the food trucks. Outside of the food trucks there is Charlie's Grill in the basement of 4200 serving standard American style food like burgers and sandwiches and Billy Rays serving soul food (great fried pork chops) in the HOSC (4660 I think... The one with the giant NASA logo on the side with "International Space Station" written in huge letters). On the Army side, the bowling alley actually has a surprisingly good pizza buffet, Firehouse Pub (decent wings) and there is some restaurant in the golf course country club that I've never been to. There was an incredible German place at tge Officer's Clubbut it has shut down and is currently being renovated into another restaurant, should be opening soon though. 7/24/2015 11:46:19 AM |
