mom and dad always spanked me with their open hands. Then would sit me down and talk to me about why they did it and how my behavior would need to improve so that I wouldn't get them anymore. Worked pretty well. I always understood why I was getting my ass whooped and they didn't have to do it often.

I'm not anti-spanking; there are a few times I think it's been the right tool for the job. That's really rare, though. The spankings I've dealt to my daughter have been very infrequent and more of a "you damn well are going to stand in the corner."

Even that's not a typical punishment; usually I take things away and/or try to go with natural consequences of her mistakes. The corner is really mostly for when she throw tantrums, and spanking is if she leaves the corner. The corner was constant a few years ago when I first got her half the time...it's rare now that she's older and has had a few years for me to unfuck her behavior.

Usually got the belt or the hand. It worked for me, because unlike the idiot who posted ^^ that...I didn't want to get hit again. So I usually tried to not repeat the same bad acts that led to me getting spanked.

Yeah...it doesn't work on some kids...but I imagine it worked on a good majority. Are there other, less physically harmful methods to discipline your children?? Probably...but spanking worked pretty well for me.

My mom would whoop me with a wooden spoon until i got old enough to block her and take it away from her.... but it didn't really stop me from misbehaving. i was more afraid of my dad's "i'm dissapointed in you" than any physical punishment.

some of my cousins got their asses beat by their dads... decades later, it's apparent it didn't do much good, and was more likely detrimental
