twitter is saying the guy might still be alive. initial reports are that it was another unarmed black guy.

Cops are notably taking a much lighter touch this time. Just bullet proof vests and nightsticks, sometimes a shield and helmet. No tear gas (so far), no assaults on neighborhoods.

Not sure if there has been looting or vandalism this time yet.

Arresting drug users is beneficial for the communities. Sure if you get arrested for not wearing a seat belt, you are pissed, but logically the rule is in place for your own good.

If a cop arrests a minority dealer, I see a cop helping a community, you see a victim going to jail because racism/government/society. There are more relevant factors besides skin color, to a cop, its whether or not you broke the law.

The liberal mindset of seeing criminals as victims representative of an entire minority is the most racist shit of all time. Like people defending rioting in Baltimore, or making a city-funded memorial for Michael Brown.

I think pot should be legal but besides this drug are some of you really arguing that the police should just ignore heroine and crack dealers?

I would like to see reform though in how we handle those caught for mere possession of hard drugs (i.e. heroin, crack, meth, etc). I think most and even a lot of conservatives are on-board with this idea. Except maybe Scott Walkers who argues we need to have "harsher" drug laws punishing users.

No, not the dealers. The dealers and the users are a little different.

But if drugs were legal, there wouldn't be black-market dealers (how often do you see someone selling beer on the corner?), nor would there be nearly the amount of crime surrounding the use and sale of drugs. This goes for street level crimes all the way up to Mexican Cartels.

Drinking alcohol is legal in the USA. If you drink and drive you have commited a crime. If you become addicted to alcohol you have a "disease" and go to meetings.

I think similar laws can be put into place for most drugs. Exactly how to handle drugs like heroin, pcp and meth bets tricky but throwing these users in jail puts a financial strain on the prison system and does nothing to solve the problem. I'm sure a trophy wife popping oxy is treated differently than a junkie strung out with a needle in their art. Both are doing opiates. Same for crack and cocaine users.

There are always exceptions. Generally though, using hard drugs (or heavy use of weed/alcohol) does not correlate with wealth or a successful career. When I say getting drugs and dealers off the street is good for a community, I'm talking about meth/heroine/cocaine.

Also quite a few people in finance (at least in NYC) use cocaine on a regular basis. It's not an outlier.

both of those things impact more than just the individual.
seat belt use helps keep ED's less clogged with serious injuries and keeps auto insurance rates lower for everyone.
meth heads certainly affect the people they interact with, not to mention the dangerous meth labs they support.
