Which is better for a cat? Declawed and having a good home or not declawed and living out its days in a shelter?

^^ As long as it is the forever home. But really there are many alternatives now, like the nail covers, and there are lots of things you can do in your house to minimize /eliminate scratching on furniture

rehoming is always an option or handing the animal over to a reputable rescue, NOT SURRENDERING TO A SHELTER

But to further clarify why you should not declaw please read below

A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (“Risk factors for relinquishment of cats to an animal shelter”, by Patronek, Glickman, Beck, et al., JAVMA, 1996:209:582-588) found that declawed cats were at an increased risk of relinquishment to animal shelters.

Among relinquished cats, 52.4% of declawed cats were reported to exhibit litter box avoidance, compared to 29.1% of non-declawed cats.

From CourierPostOnline.com, February 1, 2003: “Eighty percent of the cats that are surrendered that are declawed are euthanizedbecause they have a behavioral problem. . . . Declawed cats frequently become biters and also stop using litter boxes . . . one or the other.” —William Lombardi, shelter director, Gloucester County, New Jersey.
A study of 163 cats that underwent onychectomy (declawing), published in the July/August 1994 Journal of Veterinary Surgery, showed that 50 percent suffered from immediate postoperative complications such as pain, hemorrhage, and lameness; long-term complications, including prolonged lameness, were found in nearly 20 percent of the 121 cats who were followed up in the study.
A study published in the January 2001 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) found that 31 percent of 39 cats that underwent onychectomy or tendonectomy developed at least one behavior change immediately after surgery, with the most common problems being litter box problems and biting.

A national survey of shelters from the Caddo Parrish Forgotten Felines and Friends indicates that approximately 70 percent of cats turned in to shelters for behavioral problems are declawed.

From the Summer 2002 issue of PETA’s Animal Times: “A survey by a Delaware animal shelter showed that more than 75 percent of the cats turned in for avoiding their litter boxes had been declawed.”
According to a study published in the October 2001 issue of JAVMA by Dr. Gary J. Patronek, VMD, PhD, “declawed cats were at an increased risk of relinquishment.”

Guess I have gotten lucky every cat I have had has been fine after the procedure. There is no way I would have a cat in my house that had claws it only takes once or twice scratching on the wrong thing to destroy it.

Doss2K are you one of those people that won't get cat trees because they are tacky or don't fit your decor?

I have had the cat trees and scratching posts before and while yes you can get them to use them most of the time they don't always and all it takes is one time of them deciding to my computer chair or leather seats look worth scratching while I am at work and they are ruined. I have had enough damage in the few weeks between being a kitten and being old enough for the surgery to know that there is no way I will have a cat that isn't declawed. Granted if it were just me I simply wouldn't own any pets because I get all that stuff about possible complications, however having a family being pet free isn't an option so the cat is either declawed and has a good home or keeps is claws and takes its chances.

Because every time I say I don't want any pets they look at me like I am some mean old man? So I have conceeded on having 2 cats, only one of which has been adopted since I got there. We also have a dog I inherited, but I have made it clear no more dogs after this haha.

oh ok.

well that is still your decision. My parents never let me have animals, I got over it. Maybe stick with dogs if cats aren't your thing. I appreciate your input

I am ok with cats, I dislike dogs hence why we wont be getting another. I guess I have just gotten lucky and never ran into a problem with a declawed cat. Ours use the litter box fine and move around fine and live happy lives so never seen much of a problem with it. We are on the list at the animal shelter though so we cant adopt from there. Apparently if you answer honestly and say you would declaw the cat they will look at you as evil people and put you on a no adopt list or something. Hence why I always wonder what people feel on that issue, declaw and find a good home with people who love and take care of you, or no declaw and you end up stuck in a shelter rather than getting adopted.

Also its not just the kid its the wife who wants one, if it was just the kid I would have no problem just saying no haha.

so for them, it is not ideal to let a cat, that they have invested in, with a person planning on unnecessary amputation surgery

sooo.....

I just thought it was funny how much they were posting on facebook and the like about X number of cats were gonna be put down soon if they couldn't find a home so I showed up ready to give one a chance and then was turned away. It basically felt like they were telling me they would rather let the cat die than be declawed and live an otherwise fine life. Just made me a little confused I guess.

if anyone can make a contribution, me and my friend are working on 'presents' to give donors. We were thinking of making ornaments or magnets or a card, but we talked together and if there is cleaning, editing, cooking, present wrapping or other things that you would rather get, then we are happy to do those (non-sexual and legal) things so long as the donation matches the request
