the research actually shows there is no difference, and at least one study shows that children with 2 mothers might actually do a little better

After reading multiple versions of this story, I still can not find a reason why they were in court in the first place. The best I can figure is that it was a routine procedure so they could adopt the kid from the biological mother (they already have adopted two of her children), but the judge acted on his own and pulled the kid out of the mix.
