Just to summarize, a former conservative TWWer ran for local office in Georgia, and manufactured a family and emails between this family demonstrating that they were going to move to his town, but changed their mind because of bad policy-- policy he would change if elected.

It was a dumb idea, easy to expose, and a local reporter did so. Wolfpack2k was already a joke on TWW, but moved on to being a joke in real life. Not sure what he's doing now (probably working for projectveritas...).

Former NCSU Student Body Treasurer/Current Apex Town Councilman Scott Lassiter was busted for DUI a couple of years ago and then recently got slammed for announcing an endorsment he didn't actually have. http://www.indyweek.com/news/archives/2015/10/31/betty-lou-ward-did-not-endorse-scott-lassiter-for-apex-town-council-actually

And don't forget about former NCSU Student Government member/US Senatar/VPOTUS candidate John Edwards cheating on his wife while she was dying from cancer.

By my count, TGD would be the best politician to come out of our university in a looooooooong time.

If I recall correctly, TGD helped out a bunch of the Moral Monday folks. That won't play well with conservative bumpkins that he'll need to court.

^ i dont know his district, which as a D already, so it may be the right mix of beliefs to draw in some Rs and still gain the acceptance of the Ds.

TGD is pro-blacklivesmatter, seems to support social justice initiatives, but Rush Limabugh-esque in how he talks about government in general, and economic issues specifically.

It'll be interesting to see a TWWer campaign regardless though, many of us having "argued" with him before here.

And I'm not deleting a single thing on here

Running wasn't really planned out ahead of time, I don't have the money for it and it's going to hurt my law firm. But I've hit the point where I basically hate everybody. The NCGA -- including folks I helped put in office -- has been crippling the University system and hiking taxes on small businesses. Meanwhile the guy I'm running against spends his time whining from the sidelines instead of trying to get things done.

Realistically, odds of me winning are slim. The District is about 52% D, 21% R, 27% unaffiliated. But I'm tired of the sh*t from both sides and figured I could at least speak up a bit.

So if you have no money and you're running in an unfavorable district for a Republican numbers wise, why run as the self-hating Republican instead of just filing as an Independent candidate? You can't possibly hope to receive any help from the local or state party, right? Just curious what the campaign strategy is - and if it's just a protest candidacy that's hurting your business, why even run?

I think there are two pieces there:

(1) I may be a "self-hating Republican," but I'm still a Republican. When it comes to most issues, I'm closer to the GOP than the Democrats -- and the eternal optimist in me also hopes my party can be saved from its recent excesses.

(2) Even if I wanted to go the unaffiliated route, ballot access is a huge challenge. I'd need to get a petition signed by 4% of all registered voters in the District (around 4000ish people), and then have that verified by both the county board of elections and the state board of elections.

---

"GoldieO: You can't possibly hope to receive any help from the local or state party, right?"

The Durham Co GOP has actually been totally on board. This year's chairman is fairly close to me as far as political views go, it's surprising. The Person Co GOP didn't seem quite as enthusiastic but they were still supportive. I don't think the Caswell Co GOP even exists so not much I can do out there.

IMO whether or not the state party will help is going to depend 100% on whether they think I've got a shot at winning; they'd rather have a liberal R who's a thorn in their side than a liberal D who's a thorn in their side, and I'm not even that liberal.

But polling at the district level is notoriously unreliable, so "shot at winning" == money raised. If lots of people are donating obscene gobs of cash, the state party will invest its own obscene gobs of cash b/c I look viable on paper. If I end up like the last two candidates for this spot ($6K and $2K raised respectively), I doubt they'll lift a finger.

Raise obscene gobs of cash

Frustration. Anger. Putting my time + money where my mouth is instead of just b*tching about it on Facebook.

Hiring Margaret Spellings at $775K/yr was probably the most-identifiable catalyst. A nearly-all-Republican BOG, appointed by a nearly-all-Republican legislature, approved a salary that was $475K/yr (plus bonuses and performance) more than when Molly Broad stepped down 10 years ago. That's a 158% increase in the President's pay during a period when tuition has also gone up 78%+ (more for some campuses)... but median income for a family of four has only gone up by 20% or so. Total f*cking misplacement of priorities.

Then there's working daily in the abject clusterf*ck that is our criminal justice system. Our expungement statutes that look like they were drafted with a crayon by a crack-addled chimpanzee after it's been deprived of sleep for a week. How ridiculously expensive it is to be poor, where you get hit with $188+ in court costs for every traffic ticket, lose your license if you miss a court date and pay out the wazoo to get it restored, etc etc etc (I had a client who didn't have a license for 21 years b/c of a seatbelt ticket when Clinton was President).

Not to mention the whole "say one thing and do another" the NCGA pulled when it raised taxes on small businesses (despite tax cuts to mega-corporations), spent time enacting a bunch of abortion restrictions when there are thousands upon thousands of people out of work, etc etc etc

I could probably rant on for longer than that, but that's the gist of it lol

This is basically my main sales pitch to Democrats. No one, on either side of the aisle, seriously thinks they're going to have anything more than a snowball's chance in hell of making meaningful gains in the NCGA. Meaning the incumbent is going to get -0- done for at least 6 more years until the post-2020 Census maps are in.

Can the issues that are important to you wait that long? If so, keep backing the incumbent. I think I've proven I'm at least willing to listen to folks I don't agree with -- and on some issues agree with people who don't expect it.

Doesn't this plan have a fatal flaw though? We have semi-closed primaries, so no registered democrats can vote for you in a primary to overthrow an incumbent

I wonder if all this coverage is going to be enough to get people out to vote for him. I know he's the best candidate, but to run as a Republican -- even as the last sane Republican on Earth -- in that district...well, maybe a bit Quixotic.

But whether or no, this is really building his profile, and down the line there could be some real opportunities. All the more so if the GOP does some soul-searching in the wake of Trump. I'm not accusing TGD of thinking that far ahead about a political career he claims not to want, of course...

He's been planning this in some capacity since winning student government I think, but nothing wrong with that.

Him winning is unlikely, but his district has been 40% republican in a past year, iirc, which means he would probably get a big chunk of these voters just for being R, he just needs to pull over 20% of democratic voters to have a shot.

9/11/16: It wouldn't be a 9/11 anniversary without our Government killing someone for sport."

He then goes on to say that it is clearly killing black people for sport and stands on that repeatedly.

The next quote is:
"Take a gander at that word choice y'all: "increasingly tenuous"
Understatement of the month at least.
Things we now know CMPD will lie to you about:
==> A dead person "charging" at officers with gun drawn
