Looking for public opinion here.

One of my neighbors across the street has a cat she lets roam freely through the neighborhood. I don't appreciate that but haven't paid it much attention. The other day I had my Integra parked out front of my house, windows down (had a tree tied to roof, ropes went into interior of car). I went inside for a few minutes to set up the tree stand. When I came outside the damn cat was sitting in my car. Okay, whatever. Then a few days later I noticed cat paw prints all over the trunk, roof, windshield and hood of my Cayman, which I never park outside, only in the garage. Somehow that damn cat got into my garage and went for a stroll on the car (no scratches thankfully).

And then one night around 130/2am I went outside my front door for some reason and that damn cat was sitting right on my welcome mat. No big deal, though kind of annoying...

I'm going to talk to my neighbor tonight about her cat, but I'm not really sure what I'm going to say. I'm not trying to be a dick here, but a person's pet shouldn't be allowed to roam freely if it's gonna go wherever it damn well pleases on/in other people's property. It's also worth noting that within the city of Raleigh cats are subject to the same leash law as dogs.

Thoughts, opinions?

You should free your attachment to the land that you 'own'. Unlike us, the animal is only partially domesticated and can't make such distinctions amongst timebound concepts like "land ownership". If you don't want that cat on your shit then you should mark your territory like all other mammals do. Don't be a pussy

The cat is clearly looking for a warm spot to chill (as cats often do). Tell the neighbor you think they are abusing the cat if they don't bring it inside during the winter. Pet owners hate being accused of not taking care of their animals, so this should be pretty effective route IMO.



I kinda loled at all the stories except the cat being in your garage, pretty beat up.

Tell her you're worried it's going to start sleeping under your car or in the engine bay to stay warm when it gets cold out, and you don't want to accidentally kill it.

Or tell her you've got some pests in the garage and you're going to put poison out, and you don't want to "accidentally" kill it.

Not causing damage? Let it be. Though, the owner should really try to keep their pets on their property. Pets generally do much better indoors; but that's not always an option with feral cats. I have one feral cat that does not do well indoors at all, so it's outdoors. And there is no damn way to keep an outdoor cat on your own property.

To the point about damage; I have had a cat walk on a car of mine before and definitely scratch it. And some of us actually like to keep our possessions in good shape. If I parked my cars outside and had no garage I'm sure this issue would have come to a head already.

I'm not sure how feral her cat is, but she lives in townhome 3 miles from DTR so she shouldn't really have any sense of entitlement for where her cat can roam.

There are plenty of lizards and frogs around the property for insect pests. And the occasional snake spotting probably helps with any rodents (though I've never seen any evidence of rodents around the area).

Now if only the local coyotes could handle the cat problem

2-3-7(A): It shall be unlawful for any owner to permit an animal to be at large. etc.

If one places the protection of "ownership" around an animal, then one accepts responsibility under the law to restrain the animal to one's own or public property, suitably under control. Btw, "at large" is defined as "off the real property or premises of the owner." If the cat is feral (and not "owned") then one has a right to protect one's property from any encroaching animal (e.g. by calling Animal Control).

You don't get it both ways.

If you chase the cat away by yelling at it enough times, or if it lets you get close, a firm but non-harmful slap on the side of the back, it will learn to stay off your property. This is the neighbor's job really though.

All of those "issues" seem extremely trivial to me. I live in a downtown area with tons of stray cats...many of them go in and out of our yard (our dog sucks at scaring away cats). The only downside is when they shit in our yard and our dog eats it. Nothing worse than smelling cat shit on your dog's breath.

Regardless...if you are going to continue being a pussy about it...then just kick the cat. It probably won't come back after a nice swift pussy punt.

My dad used to just shoot em with a BB gun a few times and they generally stayed away. They would come into the yard to kill birds which he had setup things to attract them like feeders and such.

I leave my garage door (car door or regular door) open sometimes on weekends, like if I'm doing yard work, or car work, or if I just came by the house briefly and am leaving again soon thereafter.

If it is really bugging you just get a water gun. Won't hurt the cat but it will stop hanging out around your house if it ends up getting soggy each time.

Also, a few coins/bolts/etc. in a can will scare the absolute fuck out of a cat if you just shake it violently whenever you see it.

Your neighbor has a responsibility to keep their cat on their property. You can tell them if they continue to be irresponsible then you will have the animal trapped by animal control.

I've chased them away many, many times. I've zinged them with a BB pistol several times. It doesn't do any good.

...but yes, that's the neighbor's job. Not that cat owners give a fuck.

You will never soak it consistently enough to teach it to stay away, in my experience.


Here are your options:

1. Convince your neighbor to keep their fucking pets on their property.
2. Make the cat disappear (deliver it to a shelter far, far away...deliver it to a hole out in the woods...etc)

1 & 2 are probably mutually exclusive; you probably have to pick one or the other.

3. A network of solar-powered, motion-sensing ultrasonic animal repellants and/or a lawn sprinkler system triggered by motion sensors. This has been my approach.



Also, an animal walking on your car-especially your Porsche-is not trivial, and regardless, it's his prerogative to deal with it even if it is trivial. Keep your goddamn cats out of other peoples' yards and houses, and the problem is solved.

just realized i forgot to mention that if you decide to shoot the thing, make sure you get the brain. a cat shot pretty much anywhere else lets out the most godawful wailing. your neighbors would probably hear it.
