I'm not completely computer dumb, but yea, can someone enlighten me in laymen's on how someone can trace you (just a single person not the government).
what kind of information can someone get from you if they have the following: your email, name and physical address? can they track what you do online with that info and what your internet activity is?
Can you find someone's IP address with only an email? what can they do with your IP address?
also is there a way to find out that someone is tracing/tracking you online?
Please excuse my computer illiteracy thank you for your help

The basic answer to all your questions is yes. What IPs you can see on an email depends on what systems you're using. Typically you can "view source" or "view original email" and that will show you that. A 'layman' can get pretty far with that, geo-ip lookup, etc. A smart person can probably figure out a lot more with your name than an IP address. Its incredibly (and increasingly) difficult to stay anonymous on the net.
To make matters worse many sites are getting hacked and publishing personal information that can be cross referenced against other databases. https://archive.org/download/474DoctorowDigitalFreedom/474-DoctorowDigitalFreedom.mp3 (this is only half relevant to what you're talking about btw)

so it is pretty easy for a computer savvy person to do this just with your name and address?
I'm guessing that this is bascially all legal?
How would one find out if and who/where from someone is tracing your shit?
Let's say you have a restraining order against the party who is tracing you? Is there anyway to determine if this is the person? 1/5/2016 11:52:28 AM |

Idk I guess a better question is what are you trying to avoid / stop? I haven't checked in a while but I don't even consider this kind of stuff personal information anymore. Unless you're concerned about fraud, when a person already has your name and address what other information can really cause you harm?
The online NCSU directory will tell you the address of like 2/3rds of the student body.
If you're concerned about information then you're fucked. You won't be able to hide any information from anyone probably within our lifetime. If you're concerned about physical, financial, emotional loss then that's a different story.
This is all legal and there's probably no way to know if someone is tracking you unless you specifically set up a method of tracking who tracks you. Ever click on an sales email from years ago and then start getting 100 emails a second from that company? That's exactly what's happening there as well. They're waiting to see if any of the images in the email were downloaded then they know the IP that it came from etc... 1/5/2016 12:07:24 PM |

There are tons of data broker services out there. If you're willing to spend some money, having someone's name, email, and physical address can yield a ton of information. You can learn: where they shop, legal history, education history, job history, who they owe money to, who their family and friends are, what websites they visit, etc...
With just an email address you can probably find out where someone lives, but not for free. You'd take an email address to a data broker service, and figure out who it belongs to. Once you have a name you can turn up physical addresses. If you're trying to do it on your own you probably won't have much success. Almost no one sends an email from their actual machine; we all use web services. So the origin IP address is from that service not the sender's computer. The web service keeps a record, but they don't give out that data for free.
Thanks to services that track internet usage for advertising purposes, you basically give a way your whole life every time you use the internet. 1/5/2016 12:52:25 PM |

Obligatory 7 proxies...okay, now that that's out of the way:
IP address isn't going to identify anyone, only the ISP they use unless they have their own website. If it's just you with an account for an ISP they can find your ISP and that's it. Some things I would be more concerned about:
1) Social media accounts with account names/pics that can identify you. 2) Weak passwords or single token authentication. 3) Home wifi with an SSID that IDs you as the owner of the wifi.
Well, if someone knows you're the owner of a particular email address and you use that address for things like Amazon.com they might be able to get into your account. Best thing to do is keep a low online profile.
I'm not sure how true this is but from a few years ago http://www.wired.com/2012/08/apple-amazon-mat-honan-hacking/ 1/5/2016 1:58:09 PM |

Hey qntmfred OmarBadu CassTheSass do you mind please retracting the name? This has absolutely nothing to do with the mentioned person, so I would appreciate the name being removed

whoa chill, I kind of just didn't want the name to come up in a vulgar post, you know thinking for the future. Considering this is the lounge and that, in theory, the lounge is actually moderated more so than the anything goes chit chat
and I know this person, they are good people and do not deserve to be associated with the shaky reputation tww seems to pull in, but if you are really going to go into freedom of speech etc.... fuck it just leave it, I was trying to be nice that's all
also thank you all (even darkone) for your input, it is useful. As the situation develops I will possibly come back and ask more hypothetical questions
