A highly trained Phd scientist, with really a more or less petty crime that is non-violent? Although it was a substantial amount of money it's not that bad of a crime within itself. While I never had him as a professor, I remember seeing this guy around back when I was in undergrad and hearing all the animal science club members dropping his name. These were the type of people that took the club way too seriously and were all trying to jockey for position and approval among faculty so they could get recommendations for their vet school applications. I always got the impression he had relationships with his students similar to Slughorn from Harry Potter. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a case where seedless is defending a former mentor rather than old Scotty he "worked with back in the day." The dude fucked up. There's no reason to blindly defend someone's actions just because you know them.
