It's in one of the slides from a Raleigh City Council Meeting in Feb, so I'm assuming 100% legit. Also, I've seen the construction crews in the blue area digging cable. 4/4/2016 8:55:03 AM |

what is the darker shaded area (it looks like city limits but it is not actually the city limits)? Is that the final proposed service area? 4/4/2016 12:31:10 PM |

Someone laid fiber outside of my house in downtown about a month ago. I assume each provider doesn't need to lay their own fiber, so is this map just where Google foots the bill? 4/4/2016 1:49:40 PM |

how much do you pay for it? I have UVerse and live downtown but have had no offers/calls about upgrading my service. I pay for 40mb but am lucky to get 20. I must have called about it 8 times now.4/4/2016 4:57:58 PM |

so everyone needs to lay their own fiber, that sucks. curious if that means ATT digging fiber into an area of Raleigh will make Google less likely to enter it since they'd have to lay the same amount of fiber as in an untapped area but won't be able to capture the entire market. 4/5/2016 9:57:03 AM |

If AT&T already installed their Gigapower network in my neighborhood (which they did) then does that mean GoogleFiber won't come a knocking as well? Half the reason I haven't signed up for Gigapower yet is b/c I'm waiting to see what Google has in store for my area. 4/5/2016 2:16:54 PM |

Yes I think that's a pretty safe bet.
Why would you prefer Google's fiber service so strongly over AT&T if you can get AT&T's right now?]4/5/2016 3:19:11 PM |

I think you have to pay significantly extra to opt out of Google collecting all of your web traffic. 4/6/2016 12:21:28 AM |

^you have to pay around $15/month to opt out of AT&T collecting your usage data.

This is exactly why. Fuck AT&T. Ever since they bought DirecTV they've done a pretty good job of fucking with my world (as far as utilities go). Their customer service is horrible and they're really good at turning simple stuff into very complicated messes. I made the mistake of merging my internet bill with my DirecTV bill b/c they gave me a $5/mo discount. Countless fiascos later I split the two bills back up.
There's also the time that AT&T knocked out their internet coverage in my neighborhood for 5 days. That was fun. Or a month ago when it was out for 1 1/2 days.
Fucking AT&T...4/6/2016 1:08:10 PM |

I love my uVerse service...way better than TWC. Can't speak for Direct TV though, or any satellite service, thankfully.
Even if that wasn't the case, I'd happily pay the extra $15 for [any] fiber if it was ran in my neighborhood.
[Edited on April 6, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Reason : When you have normal internet, fiber's fiber imo] 4/6/2016 1:58:22 PM |
