this is the good one, right? i'm fine with a marathon that benefits actual real local charities, all the other events can go suck a dick though

I was under the impression this was a for profit enterprise here. I haven't seen any mention of charitable foundations with the rock and roll marathon.

Did some additional research, there are donations coming from the race entrants fees to the V foundation but the company that runs these things is for profit and none of their funds are going to charity. And they have the balls to get volunteers for this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competitor_Group,_Inc.

Quote :
"CGI doesn't donate to The V Foundation; they merely provide a platform by which runners can raise their own money. This year, runners who registered for Team V got a free entry into the RnR Raleigh race if they raised $750. The race website's charity page does not make clear that CGI would not be donating to The V Foundation, nor that cancer research would only receive money from those runners who signed up for Team V and took on the task of fundraising personally. The only part of their statement that even hints at this distinction reads:

When we visit Raleigh, we strive to leave behind lasting change by giving our participants the chance to make a real difference by raising money for local and national causes they care about.
It's vague at best about the fact that the for-profit race corporation, CGI, will not be giving up any of its profits. And it would be rare for a potential registrant to even dig this far into the website.

An article in this week's News & Observer makes the source of the donations clear: "Team V members had to raise at least $750 each to be part of the Cary-based foundation's team. The V Foundation does not receive any money [from] any other part of the race.""

[Edited on April 10, 2016 at 11:02 AM. Reason : So this is even less money going to the charity than most cancer walks/runs etc.]

As a former downtown resident I concur and say everybody should stay home and just write a check. All the marathons/fun runs/group brunches at Cameron Village in the spring and fall mean you get quarantined in a couple of square blocks on weekend mornings. Went out to get gas in 2010, took me over an hour to get home a couple of blocks.

Our first local marathon of the year is next weekend. Gonna screw things up for a while but I'm parking my ass at home and not sitting in traffic just to go to the store.
