Do y'all feel like you're good at crafting an apology when you screw up? In your experience, what have been the most effective and/or affective ways folks have apologized to you?

If one acts impeccably then there is no room or reason to apologize.

1/3/4/5 seem way more important than 2/6

#2 is obvious, unless the person isn't aware of whatever it is for which you're apologizing.

I don't think I could ever do #6. That seems like telling a joke, then asking for laughter.

I feel like I often explain the situation in order to give context to my actions. If I'm actually seeking an apology, it's 99% of the time something I misunderstood or did unintentionally; it's not an act of malice.

Problematically, I feel like this can be read two ways though:
1) He's sorry, and here's why he did whatever thing in the first place or
2) He's sorry but [something that shifts blame]

Some decent advice I've heard is an apology shouldn't include the words if or but since they tend to shift blame. I'm sorry if you misunderstood what I was trying to do. I'm sorry but if you hadn't done X then I wouldn't have done Y.
