People on the Internet are horrible, get used to it. As long as online anonymity is a thing people will be as awful as they think they can get away with. It's not a unique experience for a woman or a sportswriter. In fact, just based on pure volume I bet Skip Bayless had been told to go fuck himself with a post hole digger than have ever called Sarah Spain a cunt.

i would disagree with this...female sportswriters seem to get more shit than their male counterparts. skip bayless would be the exception in that case. granted, that's anecdotal and there's no real way to back that up. but it seems that most sportswriters i see on twitter (male and female) agree about that.

Also, Pew research disagrees with you about who receives more vitriol. 44% of men vs. 37% of women based on recent poll. Type of harassment varies, women tend to get more sexual based insults/threats but overall less as a percentage of users.

I'm sure much can be attributed to sites they visit, activities online, etc.

The Internet is a great equalizer. People who have never been shit on before because they're powerful, popular, attractive, have a newspaper column etc. are usually quite upset the first time they are told to fuck off and while they're at it go ahead and fuck their mother too.

It's kind of like the shock of a handsome person not getting free shit once they are out of their prime years. The equality of social media has given voice to people who never had voices before and with that you soon realize that most people are awful and should never ever get to speak.

The entire internet is a harsh environment, yes, but it's asisine to suggest that sports (and gaming) media aren't more harsh towards women than other spheres. Did you see the shit people said the day the entire Around the Horn panel was female? It's a whole different level than the standard vitriol toward media personalities.

Telling somebody that you hope they get hit by a truck on the way out of the studio is reprehensible, but fairly standard issue. Actually threatening to kill someone is a different level.

Things like stalking are an actual concern. getting called a cunt isn't really a problem, frankly. If you're in the business of giving an opinion publicly both you and your ideas will be criticized and everything about you will be verbally attacked. As long as that doesn't actually entail a physical attack that's just part of the gig unfortunately. Or, don't use social media and be aware that online comment sections are like public restroom stall doors. It's not ok, it just sort of is a thing that shitty people do when nobody will catch them.

Because so many men are told, "I hope you get raped again".

It's bad enough that a large percentage of women will be assaulted or raped. The fact that some men feel the need to bring up those experiences, and wish the victims to suffer through such acts again, is sad. Being an asshole on the internet isn't surprising, nor is some level of harassment, including threats/mentions of acts of violence. But you cannot deny the intentional targeting of women with sexually-specific insults is much more of a problem than for male targets (except maybe gay males, IDK). Just look at the comments nearly any time a female is involved in a broadcast, referees a male game, coaches a male team, etc. and you will see the scum of this country, without provocation, harass females much more so than the males, and in ways not typically associated with male figures.

A NFL team simply announcing they had a female assistance coach was enough to draw out these shitfucks. Imagine what females actually in public roles go through.

Generally speaking, insults come with the territory. There is something to be said for our cultural rhetoric that frames anything female and sexual as pejorative, though. The psychological effect of a majority of our casual insults being misogynistic (or homophobic, a separate issue) is not insignificant.
