I actually prefer to go out the back door and pop around the corner of the house and tell them to get lost. I don't like to let them look inside my house. The key to handling unwanted folks at your door is to speak first and with an authoritative tone. Make it obvious that you do not want them there. Try not to let them speak at all.

I live in a pretty cookie cutter neighborhood, so it's gonna happen to me. I don't open the front door for anyone without my 90lb dog sitting next to it. If its a normal salesman type like lawn-care, frozen food like someone with a uniform on I just open the door and shake my head no thanks. If it's the guy/girl peddling bullshit like vacuums I hype the dog up to growl and bark then I open the door but leave the glass door closed and just point at the dog while he's going ape shit and just shrug my shoulders. It's actually a bit of fun for me and the dog.
