I purchased this a year ago and never really found any games that kept my attention long enough. I purchased mine at the same time as one of my friends, but they are way more into it than I ever was.

From my understanding, it's a proprietary encryption. Regular SD cards cannot be formatted and used the same way. It's Sony's way of trying to add security and prevent piracy, and they $BANK$ on it.
