Pardon my ignorance, but did we waste a bunch of money on courts and prisons to just have one guy hand out get out of jail free cards? Asking for a friend.

did you know that private prisons can fine states millions of dollars if 75% or more occupancy is not maintained?

like to the tune of $3 million. taxpayer money hard at work.

My point is not keeping them in jail it's why we put them there

wut?

i don't know the details of who was released and what "crimes" they committed, but I assume they were victimless crimes that probably didn't deserve jailtime in the first place, or at least not as much as they received. like minor drug offenses, which are only prison-receiving crimes largely because of our for-profit prison system.

(my assumption could be wrong)

Saw a stat that Obama hadn't used his Pardon once in his first term, is that true? that'd be weird, right? considering how many he just pardoned..? Guess I could've googled it but here we are.

jk, the occupancy clause written into private contracts is typically 97%, and if the state fails to supply the numbers... they pay millions in fines
