I'm sure that some of you have heard the sensationalist headlines from last week that stated researchers found evidence that the ramp-up to the supervolcano eruption in Yellowstone may actually take decades, not the thousands of years originally hypothesized. I'm not sure if I believe this right now, however I don't know a whole lot about dating crystalline structures - if someone here does, please enlighten us, but to be able to date something that old to within a few decades seems kinda sketchy to me.
In the last 7 years, the area has had a 25 CM ground swell in some places. This probably isn't that big of an issue, because scientists believe that the caldera "breaths" occasionally.
My question though, and the reason for the thread, is what happens if it blows? I looked up some information on volcanic winters, and while there have been several documented over the years, none were from a volcano of the magnitude that Yellowstone is:
From Wikipedia:
Quote : | "The effects of volcanic eruptions on recent winters are modest in scale, but historically have been significant. Most recently, the 1991 explosion of Mount Pinatubo, a stratovolcano in the Philippines, cooled global temperatures for about 2–3 years.[4] In 1883, the explosion of Krakatoa (Krakatau) created volcanic winter-like conditions. The four years following the explosion were unusually cold, and the winter of 1887-1888 included powerful blizzards.[5] Record snowfalls were recorded worldwide. The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, a stratovolcano in Indonesia, occasioned mid-summer frosts in New York State and June snowfalls in New England and Newfoundland and Labrador in what came to be known as the "Year Without a Summer" of 1816." |
So that's an obvious issue that we would have. But if you look at a map of ash coverage from previous eruptions, the entire midwest would be in major trouble, all the way out to the west coast and down into Texas. All those people are going to need places to go.
-Would it cause overcrowding on the east coast? -What crops would we lose? -How much sulfur would be emitted? Would it cause air quality issues here on the east coast? -What would the drinking water be like west of the Mississippi river, with ash potentially clogging up waterways?
What is concerning to me is that these headlines always mention a potential extinction event. If that were really the case, then do folks in the continental US even stand a chance? What would take us out?
And are there ways we could reduce the impact once it happened? I mean I know this sounds silly, but is there anyway we could do something like send planes above the ash cloud, dumping water on top to try and reduce the size of the ash cloud to keep it from reflecting so much sunlight back?

apparently we can't even afford to have FEMA in PR for more than a few weeks, so if we had a major eruption in Yellowstone we would all be fucked 10/16/2017 9:31:31 AM

It would have an impact on the entire global population. And most of the people living in North America would be fucked.
(assuming we're talking about a full on eruption of Yellowstone, not just a minor eruption - minor being relative since it would most likely still be larger in magnitude than any of the other eruptions mentioned earlier in this thread)

^^The US produces more food than any other country on Earth, and an eruption like that would wipe out most of our agricultural capacity. Food shortages and inflation would be worldwide. 10/16/2017 12:59:44 PM

I guess what we can hope for then is a series of smaller eruptions over time.
But is there anybody out there familiar with the type of dating method they used to date those crystalline structures? Again, being able to pinpoint decades out of hundreds of thousands, even a million years seems error-prone. 10/16/2017 1:16:17 PM

A super volcano eruption would be really fitting.
Also fun fact, climate change increases the chances of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions since melting ice changes the loads on the earths crust creating/shifting tension in tectonic plates. 2/12/2019 9:26:19 PM

SCP-682 is a large, vaguely reptile-like creature of unknown origin. It appears to be extremely intelligent, and was observed to engage in complex communication with SCP-079 during their limited time of exposure. SCP-682 appears to have a hatred of all life, which has been expressed in several interviews during containment.
Hope that helps. 2/26/2019 9:11:37 PM
