Hadn’t followed the off-season at all. Saw on twitter we got Adrian Gonzalez. Is he still good?

My baseball fandom has drastically decreased in recent years

Likely Starters:
C d'Arnaud
1B Gonzales
2B Cabrera
3B Frazier
SS Rosario/Flores/Reyes
LF Cespedes
CF Lagares (until Conforto comes back from DL)
RF Bruce

SP1 Syndergaard
SP2 deGrom
SP3 Harvey
SP4 Matz
SP5 Vargas/Wheeler/Gsellman/Lugo

Frazier, Gonzales, and bringing back Bruce were all huge offseason signings. I'm curious what will happen in the infield if/when David Wright and TJ Rivera come back from injuries. Outfield may get crowded when Conforto, Lagares, and Nimmo are all looking for playing time.

Only played 71 games last year, batted .242 average, .344 slugging, with 3 home runs. He's only 2 years removed from a 28-hr season but I doubt anyone is expecting him to get there again. They're taking a chance on him but there's not much downside with Dominic Smith waiting in the wings, plus Flores and Bruce able to play 1st if needed.

^Probably, but I can dream.

I'm hoping TJ Rivera has a bigger impact this year, he's looked great in minimal time.

My biggest concern with the lineup is there's no natural leadoff hitter with Reyes as old as he is. Maybe Rosario eventually, but he has to work on getting on base first. Rumors are saying Frazier could bat leadoff but I just don't see it working out that well.

Tebow hurt himself running over a sprinkler head

Otherwise nothing worth mentioning out of spring camp thus far.

I saw that he struck out looking in an at bat against a real pitcher on 3 pitches.

In other news, here's business man and soccer club owner Mike Piazza sticking it to the city of Reggio Emilia, Italy.

https://elitesportsny.com/2018/03/06/new-york-mets-mike-piazza-rants-about-italian-soccer-team-rent-video/

I don't know when Piazza became a mob boss, but it suits him.

Montero (torn UCL) out for the season, and Vargas (broken hand) likely not back in time to start the season.

Saw this on mlb.com as the predicted opening day lineup...I don't think I agree with the 1-2...but I guess until Lagares and/or Rosario prove they can keep a decent OBP they won't be seeing the top of the lineup. Might be the slowest team in the league this year.

Quote :
"1. Asdrubal Cabrera, 2B
2. Yoenis Cespedes, LF
3. Jay Bruce, RF
4. Todd Frazier, 3B
5. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B

7. Juan Lagares, CF
8. Amed Rosario, SS"

Brandon Nimmo getting the opening day CF spot over Lagares and leading off. I'm not sure in what world Cabrera is a cleanup hitter...we'll have to wait and see how this works out. I know the pitcher batting 8th was a big thing for the Cardinals in recent history, could work with Syndergaard being more decent than most pitchers at swinging, but I don't think it's worth trying for the rest of the rotation.

Looks like Plawecki (vs Righties) and deArnaud (vs Lefties) will be a platoon at catcher instead of regular starter and backup status.

1. Brandon Nimmo, CF
2. Yoenis Cespedes, LF
3. Jay Bruce, RF
4. Asdrubal Cabrera, 2B
5. Todd Frazier, 3B
6. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
7. Kevin Plawecki, C
8. Noah Syndergaard, P
9. Amed Rosario, SS

Fantastic opening day win!

- 10ks for Syndergaard and 5 more from the bullpen
- 9 runs scored without hitting a single home run (winning with small ball)
- Every position starter reached base at least twice
- 9 walks, showing off some newfound patience at the plate

Harvey's first outing was pretty great, although short. 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 5k in 5 innings. I'm surprised he was taken out so early, but it worked out.

Mets 3-1 to start the season, pitching staff averaging 11.5 strikeouts per game and 1.08 WHIP...both best in the NL.

Syndergaard back up again tomorrow, the game is being exclusively streamed on Facebook. Not sure how I feel about it but at least I don't have to go searching reddit for a stream.

I doubt we'll see him this year. I'm guessing you're joking anyway, but if he comes up at all it would be in August when the rosters go up to 40, which will just be an experiment to see how he does (which I guess is why he was signed in the first place).

The outfield is too crowded as it is with proven talent.

So good to see Conforto back. He will get no appreciation because he is playing in the wrong borough for that but he makes it look so easy.

Trying not to get ahead of myself but good things in 2018 coming.

^ tbh, if Tebow was 22 he’d be a good prospect... but no!

Last year would’ve been the time to do it when the team was out of playoff contention. Could be the same situation this year if we’re not in the playoff hunt.

Tebow hit a 2-run homer on the first pitch he saw this season in AA, so you never know. But ticket sales and ratings will be doing just fine if the team keeps playing at the level they've shown this first week of games.

He reminds me of David Wright when he had his breakout. In 2005 Wright had 27 homers, .388 OBP. Compare that with Conforto in 2017 with 27 homers, .384 OBP. But it took Wright 160 games to get those home runs, and only took Conforto 109. If Conforto hadn't gotten injured and played at the same level to finish out the season, he could have hit close to 40.

Well we kinda do know. He hit below .230 last year with way more strikeouts than hits against single A pitching. Also he's just plain bad in the field. And he's 30.

The Nats walked Conforto to pitch to Cespedes in extra innings...I don't care how bad of a night he's having, you never do that. But I'm glad they did.

First Mets sweep in DC in 10 years.

Mets beat up on Kintzler this series...3 innings (one per game), 6 hits, 5 walks, 7 runs, and 2 losses. 40% of the Mets runs in these 3 games were against him, even though he only pitched in 11% of the innings.

Flores with a walk-off homer on a 2-strike count with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. Every player gets a turn to be a hero.

Nimmo was a double shy of the cycle. They need to figure out a way to let him and Conforto play every day. Cespedes is in a huge slump but ultimately I think it's Bruce who will go at some point this season.

Mets were 10-1 with the platoon of Plawecki and d'Arnaud, 3-4 since both went on the DL with a jump in team ERA. I think that has more to do with the sudden struggles than anything else...young catchers not being able to call the game the right way, or not have an established relationship with the pitchers.

^Not tonight! Now 4-4 with the 3rd and 4th string catchers.

Cespedes is not having a good season at the plate so far (.208 BA), but he is getting hits when it counts. 18 RBIs in 19 games. On pace for 153.

^^.333 OBP is not meh. The problem this past week has been not producing with runners in scoring position. It's like everyone can hit, just not in succession. The biggest rally killer by far is Jay Bruce, who really is the odd man out in the crowded outfield.

I also think the lack of an experienced catcher is hurting the pitching staff and especially the bullpen. Everyone seems to think trading Miami for J.T. Realmuto is the best way to go, but I can't imagine what it would cost. The Marlins clearly would want young upcoming talent to compete next year...I would be incredibly upset with the team if they let either Conforto or Rossario go, but that's probably what it would take. I don't think it's worth it. All depends on Plaweki's return.

Gonzales and Bruce are really the only expendable position players, but no rebuilding team will want the old guys.

Cespedes 21 RBIs in the Mets' 21 games, but only batting .195.

I think it's time to take him out of the 2-spot and put Cabrera there. More runs will come from putting the best OBP guys back-to-back, and Cespedes' .255 is not cutting it.

I would like to see this lineup based on OBP:
Nimmo (.516)
Cabrera (.391)
Conforto (.403)
Cespedes (.255)
Frazier (.411)
Gonzales (.317) / Bruce (.300)
Plaweki (.393)
Pitcher (combined .231)
Rosario (.294)

I just can't with this team right now. This new catcher will be so much better for the pitching staff than the two minor leaguers who have been playing the past month, but the offense has got to do SOMETHING.

since its a Mets away game, there wont be a bottom of the 9th, and it will end a little bit sooner.

In the 12 games before Mesoraco had his first Mets start, the team gave up an average of 5.4 runs per game.

In the 4 games he has started, the Mets have allowed 1.5 runs per game.

Record with Plawecki/d'Arnaud: 10-1 (.909)
Record with Vido/Lobaton: 8-15 (.348)
Record with Mesoraco: 2-2 (.500)

I think losing Plawecki (and replacing him with two minor leaguers) was the main catalyst for the team completely falling apart. Hopefully we're now past that.

Lagares, after becoming one of the most consistent batters in the lineup, is now out for the season. So much for that overcrowded outfield.
