So when I opened my Facebook app a couple days ago I was asked to respond to a poll - Facebook is good for the world: Strongly Agree/Agree/Neither/Disagree/Strongly Disagree.

I ended up putting Disagree, but I am curious to hear other thoughts. I've listed my pros/cons below. Feel free to add/comment..... lock/delete/suspend/terminate/etc.

Pros:
- Stay connected with people who I'd otherwise never talk to (this has been especially helpful after spending 21 years in the Navy).
- Convenient network for groups - I use it for a couple of online games I used to play, sports, running etc.
- Convenient medium for group chats to organize events.
- Great way to keep friends/families updated on kids, life events, etc.

Cons:
- Often get to see the ugly side of people (both in their personal page and in discussions that "pop up").
- This one may just be me - I have seriously gotten to the point where I have unfollowed over 100 people on Facebook, mostly because of their religious or political views. I have morphed over the years to being very religious, to being very skeptical, to a near hatred of people who blindly post religious memes or shit about thoughts/prayers everyday. I would lie if I say I respect everyone's views, but regardless of whether I agree with people on a certain topic or not, I do not want to be spammed about religion and politics several times a day.
- Convenient medium for infidelity (this one is a stretch, but I've seen it a lot). Obviously, there's a good chance if someone is going to cheat they will find a way, but still worth mentioning IMO.

I agree that the pros outweigh the cons. I dont think people who cheat would use fb. It's too easy to snoop if you're on someone's account. I unfollow but remain friends with people whose posts I find overbearing or annoying. I don't think it necessarily shows the ugly side of people- just their real side. Whatever they want to be or say deep down but dont have the courage or ability to. That can be ugly at times, but other times is very raw and real.

What you said is why I keep my mouth shut on facebook and just roll my eyes at all of the religious, extremely liberal, and extremely conservative posts.

I do love social networking though. Back in probably 2007 the people I worked with pretty much forced me to get a myspace account. I ended up reuniting with some old friends and started partying with them. Then when everyone decided that facebook was the best social network we all joined over there and have continued to stay in touch. And yes it is great for talking to all of my cousins who I have met probably only once or twice in my life in person.

I'm thankful for tww too because it is a great place to talk about topics that are controversial, sexual, etc without your family and friends seeing what you say.

^Classic example was when a friend of mine went on facebook and said, "I don't use a condom because I just assume the girl has herpes too."

A bunch of girls we worked with who weren't even fucking him got creeped out even though they knew he was joking. You can get away with stuff like that on tww.
