certainly lived up to the hype

as someone who was 12 years old and a megafan of that 97-98 team, I had no idea about the Pippen contract disaster and the pure hatred the team had for Krauss

I definitely have read about it since, but it was wild to see it in the moment

I hate to say this but Lebron is the real GOAT, at least the GOAT of the 21st century.

^ Why do you hate to say that and how do you come to that conclusion after watching the last two episodes?

Before watching this series I started believing LeBron was better than MJ, but after watching this I've flip flopped. MJ's motivation is unmatched. That guy is so petty and personal that he takes everything as a challenge... that has to get old.

LeBron seems much more normal and not an asshole.

Lebron brings championships to more than one city. Especially Cleveland, the poor Midwest city doomed without any sport champ for more than half a century. You know how hard it is? And if this season wasn’t canceled, I bet he got another one for Lakers.

The real GOAT, or the real King, knows the pains for every city and gets the title they want no matter how hard it is!Also Lebron probably will beat the shit out of MJ in the football field b/c he is so damn strong.

Although as a North Carolinian I am still rooting for MJ.

As a reference, see how popular and valuable Kawaii Leonard is now in the league. King James is like a bigger version of Leonard.
Also Shaq is arguably greater than Kobe Bryant b/c he brought the first championship for Miami.

MJ's kids are poor at hooping, or at least can't compare with their dad at all. They seem having no interest/motivation in playing, while King James II is entering the NBA soon. You know the GOAT comparison will be like in the future....

Regarding assholes, anyone dominating and leading at one team for too long will inevitably become an asshole. Kobe is a much worse asshole than both of them.

I'm enjoying this, but its format is a little bothersome to me. The way it jups around in the timeline can be a little distracting, and some of it seems unnecessary.

Here's Ken Burn's take:

MJ is considered as GOAT because he is the student of two GOAT coaches both college basketball and professional basketball. But Lebron never went to college, and was coached by some normal guys. So he is truly a genius.

Watching MJ talk about how mentally "exhausted" he was after the whole gambling story and finishing the season...makes me really wonder how he'd handle playing in the social media era.

I consider LeBron the GOAT, and thought this doc would be a glorification of MJ and potentially sway me back into the MJ is the GOAT camp....but it honestly hasn't.

Though it has clearly shown that LeBron based a LOT of his decisions/career choices on MJ, even when people slammed him for some of those choices.

^Do you honestly think the news/media/sports coverage in the 90s was MORE than it is now?

If MJ wanted to be the sports icon that he was in the 90s today, there is no way he could just ignore social media or just hide behind a PR firm. Rodman got to go to Vegas for days out of nowhere, do you think if AD left LeBron and went on a vacation that he wouldn't be stalked out and be on the front of every sports website?

NBA Stars still have to deal with hoards of reporters/paparazzi/fans now as well as people catching them doing things on their cellphones. MJ would have had people hounding him even more today than he did in the 90s.

this is silly and puts waaaaaay too much weight into social media

He was an icon because he was a great basketball player and also because he and Nike made many calculated decisions about his public persona to ensure his brand kept growing. That second part was just as important as the part about being a transcendent basketball talent.

Also, social media isn't just about people posting mean and critical tweets about Jordan if he played in this era. It's also people shooting cellphone videos of him getting wasted in a casino the night before a game, etc. You can choose to not be on twitter or IG but you can't get away from the average person having a video camera in their pocket 24/7.

I think you’re downplaying how easy it is for the absurdly wealthy to stay out of the public eye

also, as seen in the doc, he stayed in his hotel suite while on the road and left only to go to the arena

and when he did leave, it was to play golf, which is an easily controlled environment

all valid points, but celebrities don't have near the privacy nowadays that they used to, even if it's something as simple as him being filmed refusing to sign an autograph for a kid or something

Ah yes, this completely unbiased "documentary" whose content is controlled by the very subject of the film. You should take anything you see/hear in this with a grain of salt because everything is told to make Jordan look good.

so he staged scenes in a hotel in 1997/98 to make himself look good in a documentary in 2020?

and if he did, how would that make him look good?

it’s pretty clear that he couldn’t go anywhere without being immediately swamped

Misleading a bit as I was expecting his criticism to be about the format you mentioned but anyway

I’ve seen this complaint a lot but I actually really like the format a lot. What is distracting about it? It’s interesting to see this final season but with the context of Jordan’s various relationships with management, opposing players, teammates, media, etc. peppered in.

I don't think it was 50-50, but they went into extreme detail about the business side for a huge reason. He became a brand, and that brand made him MUCH larger than just his game. Hell there are kids wearing Jordans right now that probably never watched an entire game he played in.

His shoes, the "Be Like Mike" campaign, Gatorade, Space Jam, etc.

MJ would have made a lot of money on just his salary and basic endorsement deals, tons of all-stars do, but to think the fact that he approached marketing in a different manner(as the film depicted him going a different direction and treating himself more like a tennis player or golfer) didn't have a huge effect on him becoming insanely rich and a global product, that's just not accurate. Hell the fact that MJ protected his brand SO much back then(refusing to wear Reebok for Team USA, not appearing in video games, controlling PR image, etc) should show you exactly how important it was.

MJ changed the game on the court, but you could argue he changed the game just as much from the branding side for the individual players.

Wow a series produced to convince you MJ is the GOAT convinced you MJ is the GOAT.

Lebron will never be able to touch MJ until someone syphons all of his greatest moments into 10 hours of droolworthy footage and testimony from people who lost to him then pushes it down our throat during a pandemic where all sports is canceled.

The doc did a great job shitting on your point, showing Jordan going to Atlantic City to gamble during the PLAYOFFS?! Also someone claimed to see him there at 3am but he said he was back by midnight. In 2020 that first person would def have a cellphone picture/video.

Also saw this while looking up that story
Quote :
"During a two-day break in a 1991 playoff series against the 76ers, Jordan took a reporter on an all-night trip to gamble in Atlantic City. The writer, Mark Vancil, said they walked back into the team’s hotel in Philadelphia at 6:30 a.m. just as Coach Phil Jackson was walking out. Vancil said Jordan said hello and Jackson said hello and kept walking "

Also imagine how much attention it would get today if LeBron or Steph had big gambling debts to somebody like Slim Bouler
