a question to those who really get in their feelings over looting:
are you just as upset over millionaires and billionaires getting millions of dollars in unchecked government $$$?
if not, how come? 7/7/2020 12:28:29 PM

we shoulda just skipped the bureaucratic middle step and given the money directly to Americans. just like we should be doing for most social safety net benefits that end up being bureaucratic disasters.
that said, I have no problem with the millionaire and billionaire owners and investors of companies getting millions of dollars in pandemic relief money for those companies, as long as its being used as intended to continue paychecks for their employees. everybody getting upset about TGI Friday's, etc are just fucking over all the employees that work for them. I think everybody just assumes the programs are being abused by large companies without looking for actual evidence. it's an understandable reaction, but it's not entirely rational

As someone who lives in a heavily looted area, Santa Monica, I was a bit disappointed that my local immigrant owned eye doctor and Vietnamese nail salon got looted. Why not the Cheesecake Factory across the street or the wine store with $1 mm in wine inventory that has a glass of wine that costs $800 on the menu down the block?
I refer to the 4 trillion dollars given to the finance industry and QE that's been done to pump up the stock market as looting as well, so YMMV. 7/7/2020 1:04:04 PM

Think they just reduced the requirement to use 75% of the funding for paychecks to 60% (and still have funds 100% forgivable). That seems pretty fucked up.] 7/7/2020 1:16:39 PM

George Carlin: The upper class: keeps all of the money, pays none of the taxes. The middle class: pays all of the taxes, does all of the work. The poor are there... just to scare the shit out of the middle class.
I am just as upset about giant corps getting millions and billions in unchecked government relief funds, but I don't know how to fix the problem of CEO's and politicians constantly sucking each other off. 7/7/2020 1:45:43 PM

Providing 60-75% of total funds to those in need actually is very efficient and well run for a government social program. 7/7/2020 1:57:09 PM

^ I don't understand how the CEO of Blackstone is going to keep his yacht then? Think about the jobs of the people working in ports that deliver food and alcohol to the boat. 7/7/2020 2:16:10 PM

one of the goals of PPP was 1) help ensure employees continue to receive some sort of income but also 2) help make sure the businesses that hire those employees don't end up going out of business anyways. there are many other expenses that businesses incur or otherwise have obligations to (rent, utilities, etc) so that's the point of only requiring 60% of PPP loan to be used on payroll expenses. the other eligible expenses for PPP loans are those other operating costs - rent, utilities.
I'm sure there will be incidents of PPP being abused or not adhering to those eligible expenses that will never get audited, but I think the gut reaction of "omg the Lakers got PPP money wtf" is misguided. if there's evidence that the money was NOT used according to the law, then fine let's all get pissed off. but most likely these businesses also just want to be able to pay their employees and if they can do it with PPP money like everybody else is eligible to pursue, then why shouldn't they. that's what it's there for.

I tend to agree with this. Maybe I’m biased about it because my small business received PPP funds and it has been really helpful. The most frustrating part of the process was that this program was touted as aid for small businesses but...being a small business, we don’t have a dedicated accounting department to take on the application process full time. So it felt a little unfair that these bigger corporations were getting funds while we’re scrambling to work a full day and work on the application at night and having very little luck getting somebody at a bank on the phone to have their input/help...and then you find out the funds had all been awarded (we got in on the second round of funding).
I also think it would’ve been better to give individuals more than $1200 (scorching hot take, I know). That’s obviously the most direct way to get money to people. I don’t begrudge big companies for taking advantage of the PPP funds but I do understand why individuals are upset at big companies getting millions in gov funds and all they got was $1200. I think that’s a fair thing to criticize. 7/7/2020 3:03:42 PM
