finally here starting at 40k for 400hp rwd manual is pretty amazing in this market.
I wouldn't buy the higher spec unit and just assume buy better aftermarket stuff to put on the base 5/16/2022 10:17:56 AM |

Cheaper than 4-cyl Supra, but more power than the 6-cyl Supra.

^^Agreed.
BBK and a mechanical LSD. Though you'll need larger wheels as well. (245 square is a very odd choice for the base set up) 5/18/2022 9:39:02 AM |

…but after 10k or more of upgrades on what was a 40k car just to get it suitable to hit the track, is it still a value proposition? 5/18/2022 6:07:44 PM |

No, but then again the Nissan Z, properly optioned from the factory for track use, has never been a value proposition. So....? 5/19/2022 11:37:24 AM |

^^ I'd argue yes because of where they spent the money. The engine is great and can handle way more power than stock, the trans can handle way more than stock, the interior/ergo looks pretty spot on (even comes with a factory harness bar). It also sounds like it has more than adequate cooling in stock form. What you're spending your own money on is what people typically do no matter how good the factory kit is - brakes, wheels, LSD, exhaust, tune. At 5-8k more than a BRZ/86, I think it's considerably more value 5/19/2022 7:03:17 PM |

^^ I think the 350z was good for its day when it came out, other than the convertible being an abomination.
The 370Z was prob a solid road-going sports car, but i always steered clear due to concerns over brake cooling on track. Could you remedy it? Probably, but I never felt compelled to bother.
The new one…I don’t know, maybe not POS, but it’s a refresh of a refresh of a 20 year old design. To me, it sounds respectable but not a champion.
It’s tough to beat 86/SS 1LE/C8. 6/15/2022 8:20:31 AM |

For the base Z at $40k, I'd rather save $10k and have a GR86. Properly equipped at $50k, I'd rather stretch for a Zupra.
I'm glad they're still making a Z, but the lack of R&D money they were (apparently?) able to throw at this is laughable. The design isn't that amazing, and the huge grill up front looks dumb because half of it is quite obviously the bumper support beam, not a grill. 6/22/2022 12:08:37 PM |

C&D just had a shootout between the Z, Mach 1, M240i, and Supra. Without reading a single bit of the article, I picked them in order of:
1. Mach 1 2. Supra 3. M240i 4. Z
...and that's exactly the order they finished in.
(I don't hate this thing...I'm just let down from what it could have been, and I'd never buy one.) 7/5/2022 11:20:21 PM |

Highs: Lowest as-tested price, Z heritage styling largely works inside and out, six-speed manual transmission. Lows: Needs more aggressive tires, underdamped suspension feels like it's up on tiptoes, carries over a lot from the old 370Z. Verdict: If Nissan doesn't release a NISMO version, the Z's fate may fall to the aftermarket.
We know. We hated to write that as much as you're disappointed to read it. One of the most oft-repeated mutterings during this test went something like "I wanted to like it more than I did." Our initial brief encounter with the Z at the launch event showed promise, but in this longer fight against direct and tangential rivals on roads of our own choosing, the long-awaited Z fell to the back of the pack. At first glance it captures the value and performance of the original Z quite well, but nothing brings flaws to light like several days of driving the competition.
On the road, the Z's twin-turbo V-6 drew consistently positive comments. It pulled hard and left us smiling. Only the dull and Pathfinder-esque engine sound and somewhat indistinct shifter feel generated any notebook gripes. In testing, the Z found itself in a limp-home mode despite extra cool-down passes and a couple of restarts. Running the 91 octane that's the best available in California, the Z proved slower than its 400 horses would suggest. A 4.5-second run to 60 mph and a 13.0-second quarter-mile are almost a second behind the Supra and the M240i. 7/7/2022 2:15:50 PM |

The problems were likely due to our Z tester's pre-production status. Our hurry to compare the Z meant that we couldn't get a full-fledged production car. Nissan does admit that the V-6's peak power corresponds to 93 octane fuel. We borrowed another pre-production Z for a follow-up test in Michigan on the local 93 brew, and times fell to 4.1 seconds to 60 mph and 12.6 seconds in the quarter-mile. Those times still trail the Supra's 91-octane numbers by 0.4 second.
It wasn't just the engine that seemed out of step—the warmed-over 370Z chassis struggles to keep up with the rest of the group. It behaves eagerly when the car is driven modestly, and the suspension has long-travel action that handles rumpled pavement effectively. But understeer rears its head when you push the Bridgestone S007 B-Silent tires, and that chassis gets a bit sloppy because the damping can't quite keep the car settled when you're steaming through corners or braking hard on uneven pavement. A more aggressive tire would likely up the 0.93 g of lateral grip and shorten the 166-foot 70-mph stops.
The driving position earned praise, but the 370Z-derived seats themselves pleased no one, especially since the fore-and-aft controls again are on the transmission-tunnel side. Tall drivers following short ones had to duck in to grind the seat rearward before they could climb aboard.
After driving the car over several days, we realized that the newest Z isn't quite the apex of the segment. But with stickier tires and the engine-management issues of our pre-production car sorted, we think the Z could have a better shot. 7/7/2022 3:15:26 PM |

So this car is a huge flop. And I'm not even referring to sales, though to date I think they've sold less than 1000. But I think that's due to production issues. No I'm referring to it's performance as a sports car. Beaten badly in every comparison I've seen it in. Embarrassed at R&T's Performance Car of the Year event. Nissan declined sending one to VIR for Car and Driver's Lightning Lap event, which is pretty amazing.
I'm always glad that RWD 2 door coupes exist, but wow Nissan really phoned this one in. 3/9/2023 9:06:57 AM |

nissan probably won't exist in 5-10 years. you can only stay solvent selling 20+ year old designs for so long 3/9/2023 2:06:09 PM |
