I have hunted but it wasn’t for me. Just a reminder for those who do know what’s behind your target. A bullet just came through my parents living room in Eastern NC. When my dad looked outside deer dogs were running across the property. Our land is posted but they hunt the fields around us. Just a friendly reminder. Don’t kill someone’s mom because you see a good buck. 12/4/2021 11:31:09 AM |

Mom and dad are vaccinated my brother and I are as well. And it’s deer season so yes, if you have lived in the country before there are careless hunters with high velocity rifles shooting not knowing what is behind the target while drinking natural light. I have run them away from our property enough to be certain. 12/4/2021 12:26:21 PM |

That’s fair. I’m over that topic. I got a well enough answer. My parents house is surrounded mostly by thick forest. They identified the shooter was in a field and shot at a deer in a small gap in the tree line. That gap is likely 250-300 yards from the house. They likely took the missed shot from across the field and it still hit the house. My niece plays in the room. Just a nice reminder to me and anyone else to know what is behind the target. Not against gun ownership. Am Against reckless shooting. Could have been worse but it shattered one of their cabinets before the bullet finally stopped. They haven’t found the person yet but tire tracks and a bullet and a small community I’m sure they will find him. Especially if he turns in the tag on the deer they found blood from in the gap. 12/4/2021 1:08:13 PM |

From the tire tracks and blood it was likely fired from a country road at least 1500 yards from the house through a gap in the wood line. The bullet went through the wall and stopped after hitting the second piece of wood in an oak cabinet. After blowing it out. The bullet actually looked extremely in tact. I’m guessing 30-6. First shot missed and hit the house second shot landed and killed the deer (per blood) they drive over grabbed it and left quickly (per tire tracks). Again I don’t take a stance against hunting but those who do make sure you know what’s in front of your barrel before you post up for your kill. And even per law if you can get off of the charge you are still responsible for every bullet that leaves the muzzle. 12/5/2021 11:10:37 AM |

Doubtful in my opinion. If they turn in the tag they have the bullet and my pop is tight with the game warden and sheriff in a small community. But it’s very rural I highly doubt they get em. Doubt they knew they hit the house but in a small community information moves fast. If they get the tag and he comes back they will be looking and confiscate his rifles to compare. Plus tire tracks. It’s a lottery ticket that I doubt LE can cash. 12/5/2021 11:52:27 AM |

^^ I think you'll find people without accountability aren't very responsible. From not replacing empty toilet paper rolls to mass killings, history is replete with examples.
Right now your parents are the ones dealing with the foreseeable consequences of someone else's actions. 12/5/2021 2:17:45 PM |

My point was being held accountable requires finding out you were responsible. So yes someone is responsible. That person must be established before held accountable. People are killed and deemed responsible for a crime. But then aren’t held accountable. That was my only point that there is a difference in the words.

Not that anyone cares but the caught the shooter. He is being heavily fined. He and his wife came to my parents house to sincerely apologize. My parents are forgiving people but my mom said see that blown out wall. My 3 year old niece plays right here every weekend. She could have been sitting right here. So I think with the fine and that information he got the picture. They accepted the apology and the matter is closed. 12/9/2021 7:21:07 AM |

Enough that the guy said he’s going to have to take out a loan to cover. I didn’t get into numbers. Mom said they were very nice. He had some very deep swallows. They won’t pursue any civil or damages on him. They wouldn’t have visit or not. Game warden said that rural area is not patrolled enough but she’s going to amend that. She knew all the hunters in the area though and tracked him down. Didn’t have to test the bullet. He didn’t know he hit the house but admitted it was his shot immediately when she questioned him. 12/9/2021 10:31:46 AM |

You can shoot a house and not get probation/jail/gun restrictions? 12/9/2021 10:35:00 AM |
quiksilver Veteran 770 Posts user info edit post |
I’m sure he had his hunting license stripped and tags taken. As far as the gun I doubt they took it. I’ll find out more when I see them this weekend. It was clearly an accident from a far distance and you can’t see the house from where he was shooting. He probably didn’t realize it was in the trajectory and didn’t know how far that bullet would carry. It was a long travel to end up in the house. That’s why I made this post to announce awareness. If you are shooting high velocity rounds there needs to be a backstop they need to be from a stand shooting down or at least an elevated position and the area for an adequate distance needs to be investigated. Not soap boxing I just am saying for anyone going in hunting season don’t be this guy. Could have been worse. 12/9/2021 10:52:31 AM |

It’s a small tight knit town and my dad is tight with LE as a small business owner and overall upstanding citizen so the game warden questioned all the local hunters and put the heat on them to who was in the field that day and found a needle in the haystack. He owned it when questioned. I was a bit surprised. I figured it was <50% they would find out. But as soon as he did he came to their house hat in hand. Things work a little differently there. 12/9/2021 3:40:24 PM |

Haha where I’m from likely all parties were wearing maga caps. Not sure if they make orange hunters ones yet. But if so likely every one had them on but my parents who offered him coffee in a Maga mug when he came over.
And that is not to gloss over their trump support they just wear straw or cowboy hats when tending land depending on the season. That is not smollet country but I’ve yet to see a trump hat in their house but I’m surprised.

I know a preacher's wife that was learning how to shoot a rifle, missed her target, and shot through the neighbor's kitchen window. She ended up getting a light probation sentence. I heard that the neighbors didn't like her and pursued the charges, fwiw.12/9/2021 8:42:13 PM |

I once helped demolish an old, falling apart trailer, and threw a hatchet at the interior wall. It ended up going completely through the wall and hitting the next wall in the adjoining room.
Please make sure you have a backstop when throwing hatchets through rotten trailers. 12/10/2021 9:50:10 AM |

Not sure if joke off not. My point was if you aren’t shooting down but level or up you should know what’s behind it and how far that bullet can travel. The shooter told my parents that was the mistake he made. They didn’t tell him. He knew better but the buck looked worth the risk. He was originally stand hunting. If he shot from the stand bullet would be in the ground. He was leaving and shot level when he saw. Obviously you can’t have a backstop for everything when hunting big land but that’s when extra precautions come in. Example: our land. We own property on both sides of I-40. I used to dove hunt on it. We have neighbors down the street and interstate traffic. But nothing across the street. And there is a big pasture to the other side. Not that birdshot will do the same damage of a high powered rifle and has a low carry. Out of extra precaution I only shot where I knew 100% I had clear visibility behind my sights.
TL/DR if no backstop put in other precautions and know your weapon.

I think you misinterpreted the direction of the questions, it was more KS's post implying that charges for a shooting a house were only bc the homeowner had a bone to pick.

Fwiw. We had stray dogs regularly fucking with our chickens, dogs and cats. And my dad doesn’t like killing animals. So we would unload shotgun shells and fill them with rice so to not just shoot the dogs. But when the rice would rain their ass would hit the ground if you shot over em. Not killing em or seriously injuring. Creating boundaries. Now with coyotes running that’s a reason to shoot for the kill. 12/10/2021 2:31:21 PM |
