Emoticons were made explicitly from text.

I'm not saying the TWW smileys are emojis, but not being emojis doesn't automatically make them emoticons.

They are a classic example of emoticons 2/28/2023 2:07:55 AM |
FroshKiller All American 51922 Posts user info edit post |
They are emoji in the sense that the pictograms themselves have a text representation that is rendered graphically.
They are not emoji in the Unicode sense because they aren't formal characters defined in Unicode's symbol set for emoji.
They aren't emoticons in the classic sense because they are rendered graphically instead of being purely text.
Personally, I think it's fine to call them emoji. I think I've always called the ones on T-Dub smileys. I think it's also fine to call them emoticons, because the word "emoji" didn't really take off in the US until much later, and that's the general word for some kind of smiley in a text message a lot of people knew. 2/28/2023 7:29:21 AM |

Hmm. guess the "emo" part isn't relating to "emote" then. funny coincidence. 2/28/2023 12:19:57 PM |

It's almost like the definition of emoticon evolved as technology advanced so people could actually post little animated smiley faces instead of using text characters.
These things were 100% referred to as emoticons in the era between the dark ages of the early 90s and the rise of smartphones.2/28/2023 12:21:52 PM |

I just said it's fine to call them emoticons. But they are not a "classic example" of emoticons as you said. Classically, emoticons are not images.

Classically they are also not emoji because they existed long before emoji came into the English language. 2/28/2023 1:23:48 PM |

I understand the viewpoint, I guess - with evolution of the meaning of a word with respect to usage by the majority of the populace, and how the definition changes slightly (or more slightly) over time
like I would argue that nauseous is one of those words, even though it doesn't actually mean afflicted with nausea. also I don't like how nauseated sounds - I guess I'm technically wrong on that too tho - but idk.. one of you scholars can come up with better ideas here
I guess we can all agree to disagree, and support our troops
