Rock it til the wheels fall off, or sell in time for it to still be worth something and purchase upgrade at an opportune time such as black friday?

What is more cost effective? The former would be upgrading less frequently by perhaps nearly a factor of 2. And potentially purchasing at regular price because you need it then. The latter you get $ to offset the cost.

I got my 13 about 12 months ago, and I tend to keep phones at least 36 months.

By that rationale, if I get new it will be iPhone 18, not new probably 16

Would like others to share their rationale for upgrading. Apple watch inspired the thread...

I certainly would like a newer model, but feel like until I get to point I can't make a work day, or I stop getting update, might as well keep it

I know a guy who used to get a new car every couple years. He is also on his 3rd marriage. Coincidence?

I've known someone that got a new car like every 12-16 months and also changed apartments about the same frequency

I buy the latest iPhone every year and give my wife my 1yr old one - then we sell or trade hers in. Eventually we'll have kids in the mix but our oldest isn't phone-eligible yet.

I justify it a few ways - better photos of the kids or anything really because can you put a price on memories?!? / I'm on my phone quite a bit and sometimes seconds matter / it doesn't cause a dent in our finances

Sounds like a broke-ass mark.

I got an iPhone XS in 2018 and would still be using it, but I decided to treat myself to an iPhone 15 Pro last year.

I got a third-generation iPad Air in 2019 that I'm still using, too. I will generally keep a device as long as it's receiving security updates and still meeting my needs.

Don't think I've ever bothered with resale.

The exception to this for me are computers I use for work. A 10% performance boost is more than enough to justify the cost. the opportunity cost of having me sit and wait that extra 10% is like getting an extra day or 2 a month off from work. its totally worth the cost to upgrade and work tends to agree, because I use their money
