I really like the movies, but I wish they had more substance to them. My favorite parts are when they do that "fast forward" with the map and the red line or when Indy is back at the university. I think just capturing more of what traveling or living life like was in that era, for a professor and of course someone of Indy's stature, would be really cool. The Temple of Doom is the worst in this regard, even though there are many ways they could've accomplished this with the same coreI guess I could get what I'm asking for from just reading more books though, there's a whole genre (not the cheapo adventure ones, they have the issues)

I'm not so sure that's true. George Lucas was almost certainly influenced by H. Rider Haggard's character Allan Quatermain, who first appeared in a novel called King Solomon's Mines. There are a ton of Quatermain novels.
