For those who know something about falls lake and river basins

Why is it that of the last three rains that we had the percipation amounts were close to the same but the first two moved the lake level by multiple feet but the last by only a few inches?

Is this because Falls Lake is sloped and we have reached the point where the volume goes up much more dramatically for each inch or does it have something to do with absorbation of water in the soil rather than drainnig to the lake?

the last rain that moved it a few feet was more widespread from what i heard, where as the last few have not been falling in the right areas

i'd guess the one big one had a lot more run off than the last few smaller ones

it mostly depends on where the rain falls. Most of the rain we get in raleigh actually does not go to falls lake. The drainage area for falls lake is northwestern of the city for the most part. (towards durham, etc.)
The rain has to fall in the drainage area (watershed, basin, whatever you want to call it) for it to affect falls lake.

Falls lake was created by a dam being built on the Neuse River north of the City of Raleigh


water that falls here near campus ends up flowing through various creeks until they reach the Neuse, usually via Crabtree Creek

but all of that reaches the river downstream of the dam

the neuse flows east-southeast from the triangle through towns such as Clayton, Smithfield, Goldsboro, Kinston, and New Bern where it meets the Trent River and finally empties into the Pamlico Sound at Oriental NC (Hwy 70 follows the river to the coast)

I'm building a few new houses and we're striving to make them as green and energy efficient as possible. In that light I've been taking a long look at dual flush toilets. Basically it lets you choose between a 0.8 gal flush and a 1.6 gal flush depending on what you're flushing. New toilets generally run above $200, but I've found a number of retrofit kits in the ~$30 range. I haven't tried them personally but they seem to get good reviews across the board. A friend installed them in an apartment complex that he manages and it has reduced his bills substantially.

I have 4 rain barrels, and they all are not visible from the street. The two in the front yard you'll only notice once you start looking for them (follow the downspouts). You can have rain barrels and have them hidden out of plain sight really easily. There is no reason for a HOA to say more than two rain barrels are too many.
