Well okay you want to hear an argument.....quick question how many ACC teams made the Final Four last year? The year before that how many? Tournament time is what counts. The Pac 10 has been the better team in the tournament the last two years. UCLA has two back to back Final Fours. Oregon made the Elite Eight last year as did USC. The ACC has 1 Elite Eight appearance in the last two years. The Pac 10 had 3 Sweet Sixteen teams this past year. This year will be much of a repeat with UNC being the only team with a chance of going deep. 2/25/2008 2:49:25 AM |

The SEC had 2 national champions the last 2 years too. no im jk, that makes sense, i realize the ACC didn't have a superior contender the last two years (except UNC who was upset in the elite 8) but Duke and UNC are both better than they were. So I guess I'll buy into your argument, with Az St getting better and a lot of top prospects going to some of those schools. 2/25/2008 3:43:28 AM |

Look, the Pac-10 is better this year. No shame in that, it's just the way it is. I know that doesn't make people who resent Herb feel good, but it's the truth.
I live in CA and watch a lot of college bball (both Pac-10 and ACC). The ONLY reason the Pac-10 isn't the highest rated conference is because Oregon St is just terrible. Dreadful. Every other team is SOLID... The ACC is a few shitters like UVa (even though they beat UofA), State and BC, a bunch of mediocre to average teams like UMd, Clemson and Miami and Duke/UNC (elite level teams).
^^^ I actually try not to make tha comparison because it isn't really relevant to judging conferences in a given year... the SEC is horrid this year but they have the last two National Champions. That doesn't mean much to me... I use a combination of common sense, eyes and numbers... If you only use 1 of those 3 (i.e.- #'s or RPI) then you are fooling yourself..

HUGE HUGE game tonight at home vs. UCLA
930 ET
FSN - AZ
Fan Club meets at Sammy's tonight at 9. Free beer to anyone who shows up in maroon and/or gold.
if they win, not only should it lock up a tourney bid, but they'll become the ONLY team in the nation to have 5 wins over RPI top-20 teams (Xavier, UofA x 2, Stanford). 2/28/2008 3:03:36 PM |

They were dropping crazy threes. UCLA has been shooting like 20% from the 3 pt. line the last ten games, shot 50% last night. It looked like it was gonna be close w/ 2 minutes left in the first half, UCLA got a crazy momentum swing off a missed dunk and hit three 3's, one at the buzzer.
The team is just beastly. Starting 5 will all get drafted in the next two years.

At least 97% of teams in the NCAA are never going to have a better program in the next couple of years.
The difference is that there fans would be ecstatic with finishing 3rd or 4th every year and just want to make the dance. They realize that they will likely lose 8 games every year in conference play. So Herb fits their expectations perfectly.

point is, we've heard lately in sports radio and in the media how herb is doing so great compared to lowe/nc state...how state wishes they still had herb, etc
Herb would still be UNC's and Duke's bitch...thats why we got rid of him
at least Sid beat Carolina AND Duke last year
but yeah i understand what you're saying about their fans' expectations...course at the same time we liked Herb alright early on

I don't think they just like Herb "alright". He wins 2 out of his next 3 to finish 9-9 and he'll be the king of town, even if they lose game one in the PAC 10 tourney.
BTW, it appears my attendance prediction was off by a lot. 11,000 tickets went out, I said 8,000. Wells Fargo seats 14,500 though. 2/29/2008 12:20:04 PM |

Yeah, it does. We aren't ever going to have a better program than those two again. Ever. No matter who is coaching. That's the way it is.
We can compete with them though in any given year. And we should.
-----
I do think that Herb can build ASU to be a better program than Arizona though... especially when Lute is gone for good. I think that is the better comparison to UNC/Duke since they are in-state. UNC, Duke, Kentucky and maybe Kansas are the only historical peers to UCLA.
-----
UCLA and UNC would be one HELL of a Title game... but it won't happen.

I wonder who will be the next coaches at Duke and UNC after K and Roy retire
certainly Johnny Dawkins seems like the most logical candidate for Duke since he's been an assistant under K for years and years and years
UNC I'm not as sure...would it be a current assistant? Would they try to go out and get a Larry Brown (doubtful) or a George Karl? Or maybe just the best available, regardless of ties to UNC...dunno
I do think if Sid is able to slowly improve the program year after year, we might have a chance to be real solid once K and/or Roy retire...I mean K was pretty much Jimmy V's and Dean's bitch his first couple of years in the conference...but coaching changes, and of course lots of time have turned him into one of the best coaches in the nation 2/29/2008 12:38:11 PM |

Roy and Coach K will be at UNC and Duke longer than Sidney is here. Slowly improve? We have quickly gotten worse....if he doesn't do well next year the seat is going to be real hot.2/29/2008 3:42:05 PM |

^^ I don't know. There is a huge difference now. ESPN. Duke and UNC became the "it" programs and sell themselves... and it happened largely at our expense (i.e.- at a time when we were really far down). They recruit themselves.
I honestly have a hard time seeing us ever get back to that level, consistently. And sadly, I have serious doubts that Lowe can get us back to the level we "enjoyed" recently. I'm hoping he can.

We need to get out of last place in the ACC before we can think about replacing those 2 teams. Or did you mean we can just hope that they suck in the future and be down to our level and we can beat them regularly? We can beat them on a regular basis, make it to the NIT every couple of years...but we'll be WINNARS. Who needs NCAA tournaments? We can beat Duke and UNC! That's all that matters, right?

hey i'm more realistic than thinking we'll be a 73-74 style powerhouse ever again, i'm just happy to see us have a good season now and then and go dancing and beat some in-state rivals...but if a texas or florida or tennessee can jump to a national title contender in a short time, its possible

ASU is a great place for Herb because their fans have no expectations. They've never had a DT or 2 national championships so it's easy to see where just making the tourney would be a thrill. 3/1/2008 10:27:31 AM |

When it comes down to it, Arizona State still isn't even sniffing a tournament bid right now.
They'd need to catch fire the last few weeks to make the tournament this year.
Harden would be a first round pick if he decides to leave this year and Pendergraph would be drafted.
We all know Herb's players have a tendency to leave so we'll see if they have enough returnees to get in the tournament next year. 3/1/2008 1:21:26 PM |

oh, and there's no way Harden or Pendergraph leave after this season. Polk might transfer, but nobody will leave for the NBA. Everybody will be back and they're adding Rohde (Arizona's best HS player, 6'8") and Coy (probably the best HS player in Kansas City histroy, 6'7")
