reports saying grobe heading there. probably good for us in the long run since his offense always kicks the crap out of us... but bad for the conference since he was keeping wake respectable. 12/5/2007 11:31:34 PM |

Just realized this.
Grobe going to Arkansas means that the longest-tenured coach in the state for the five I-A schools is Skip Holtz. 12/6/2007 8:42:57 AM |

this would be a really dumb move for Grobe IMO. How will he handle the pressure? he hasnt seen pressure like he will once in Hawg Country. He has built a solid program at Wake and has forced them to commit to the football program.
if this IS true, i fear Paul Johnson maybe the front runner to take over. It would be a easy transition for him to come in keep the ball running or rolling 12/6/2007 8:59:33 AM |

^Yeah, Paul Johnson probably now has his pick of Wake, Georgia Tech, and Duke. He can just sit back and watch the money roll in as a bidding war ensues. More power to him, but I don't like the idea of us having to play against him. 12/6/2007 9:05:48 AM |

Grobe has to step up to a bigger name program if he ever wants to be recognized as one of the better coaches in the country. He's done a great job at Wake, but who outside of NC even realizes that? At Arkansas, he'll have chances to prove himself against LSU, Alabama, Auburn, etc. He's got a chance to flame out, but the potential for success is much greater if he succeeds. No matter how well he does at Wake, there's always going to be a glass ceiling. 12/6/2007 9:05:52 AM |

It's a shame for Grobe that Darren McFadden won't be back. Just think what he and Felix Jones would bring to Jim Grobe's offense. Felix Jones could leave this year as well, but I'm inclined to think a year under Grobe could really help his draft stock, provided he stays healthy. 12/6/2007 9:18:54 AM |

just to inform everyone, its over...this thread was made to accompany the one on packpride to get rumors started that Butch may leave
its all been a joke from the start and I was asked on here to start one to help anyone who may have ventured over to be convinced it really was quite the deal.
seems that these threads actually were the "unnamed sources" that ESPN and the AP were using to get the rumors that Butch was going to the Hawgs.
job well done by those recruited here and at PP

^ So because of an NC State fan's joke, the state of North Carolina government is paying Butch Davis $291,000 more per year on an invented rumor?
I always thought I might have done this. I kinda started a rumor that Bob Knight was going to become the new NC State head coach in early 2001.
Two weeks later, I heard it on the radio. 12/6/2007 10:47:05 AM |

Did anyone other than Barnes and Calipari get a raise out of the NC State basketball search? I know the thing was a mess, but:
Mike Montgomery was shown the door a couple weeks later, and his bosses were just being vindictive by not letting him out. We wouldn't have anything to do with Brady. Lavin remained a commentator. Beilein was screwed over when Fowler reneged on the terms of the WVU buyout.
In retrospect, I'm still not certain whether Calipari was playing us for a raise from the start or got spooked when informed of the academic constraints.

Barnes was close to leaving. His wife was what held him back.
I always thought Cal was just Beamering us, but per that ESPN article, he was ready to go. (No idea how honest the article is, but it actually sounds like he was very very close to leaving)
Belien would have been here in a heartbeat. He was looking for somewhere to go....whether it was NC State or anywhere else
The worst of them all was Lavin, IMO. Although he gets paid a shitton with no pressure, it's pretty bad when a guy who doesn't even have a coaching job turns down your job.

Ideal situation: They talk BMFD into coming.... but only after Paul Johnson has signed with GT, Duke, or somewhere else so they are pretty much screwed at getting a quality coach.12/6/2007 12:01:03 PM |

^^ While Lavin was clearly the worst, it appeared as though he either didn't have a solid offer (b/c we were negotiating with Beilein at the same time), or he had an offer and we pulled it after he went public. He is a terrible coach, and we shouldn't have considered him in the first place. He has a huge ego and couldn't keep his mouth shut, but he never actually turned us down. 12/6/2007 12:11:04 PM |

Quote : | "FAYETTEVILLE - For the second time in three days, Arkansas has been spurned by the man picked to be the Razorbacks’ new football coach.
Media outlets throughout the country, including The Morning News, reported Wednesday night and in today’s newspapers that Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe would replace Houston Nutt. Today, Grobe decided to remain at Wake Forest.
On Monday night, the UA zeroed in on Clemson coach Tommy Bowden, but things fell apart and the board of the Razorback Foundation never voted on a salary supplement for Bowden. The negotiations with Grobe went further and the foundation board approved a salary supplement for him.
The foundation would not be asked to approve such a supplement unless the coach involved had agreed to the terms, according to a source.
Grobe went before his team last night and that the situation became very emotional, according to reports. He apparently told Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long today that he had changed his mind." |

That's easy. None.
They were in the Southwest Conference before the SEC. It was made up of Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, SMU, Rice, and Houston. I think they were one of the powers alongside Texas and Texas A&M.12/6/2007 2:27:35 PM |
