and I'm glad we did, I would have been okay with taking Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Jr. III in the first, Dan Connor in the second, and getting DeMario in the third... but we still had a good draft 4/27/2008 4:00:24 PM |

Quote : | "Mayo Rewarded for Doing Things Right
It's no surprise that Jerod Mayo was out helping his mom work in the yard when the phone call from the New England Patriots came Saturday afternoon. It's no surprise because Mayo was doing what he does best. He helps people on and off the field. On the field, he makes people around him better. Off the field, he helps makes people's days go better.
Mayo will always be one of my favorites to have passed through Knoxville. He did it the right way. And he did it by fighting through plenty of injuries. Had Mayo stayed healthy his entire Tennessee career, he would be remembered by fans as one of the greats. As a media guy who has dealt with him since he was a 214 pound high school linebacker, Mayo will be remember as a great one in my book, not just for his play of his last year, but for what he meant to his teammates and what team meant to him.
When things were a struggle early this past season up front, Mayo never complained. He never said his teammates were not getting it done. As he held it together and the defense came together around him, Mayo never wanted any praise. He never questioned or complained about how many tackles he was credited for compared to how many he actually made.
Instead he did what he does everyday and that is go to work on and off the field. Last spring when I went to cover Tennessee's community service day with Habitat for Humanity, there was Mayo on the ladder hanging siding. And he never stopped the entire time I was there. That day he helped make some's life better. But it wasn't just the big event type things that impressed me with Mayo. It was the little things like tying roomate Inky Johnson's shoes for him before they left their apartment each morning for class.
It was Mayo last July who decided this team needed to practice instead of doing seven on seven and individual drills. It was Mayo who organized full scale eleven on eleven practices in a scripted workout.
And win or lose it was Mayo, who was always standing in front of the media talking about the win or the loss. He led by example. He led by his play and his commitment to working on and off the field.
In his career at Tennessee, Mayo had one off the field incident in a case that Mayo calls mistaken identity. That incident nearly three years ago still bothered Mayo heading into his final season and it provided him with plenty of motivation.
"That whole thing humbled me to the point where I don't go to as many places like that, and I don't drink alcohol," Mayo said back in July. "Even though it didn't play a factor in the fight or anything, that's just not me. I don't want to put myself in any situation where I have a lot riding on the line and have it taken away over something silly.
"That's not the kind of attention I want to draw to this university. The attention I want to draw to this university has to do with winning games and winning championships."
With his degree in hand meeting his mother's demands, Mayo spent the last few months traveling the country stepping out of his comfort zone selling himself. As a result, Mayo is Tennessee's first top ten pick since John Henderson in 2002, and he is heading to a franchise that has been all about winning championships the last few years, which fits Mayo well.
"I feel like I bring a winning nature," Mayo said Saturday. "The Patriots already have a winning nature. I feel like I bring a work ethic. They already have that as well. You can't really bring too much to a team that only lost one game in a season. I'm just excited to be in the position that I am and to be able to learn from some of the greats in the game."
And knowing Mayo, those greats will probably learn a few things from 'the rookie'." |

I know that ESPN, writers, commentators etc. have recognized it but I never remember the NFL itself doing it like that with the jersey and all

Good job selecting Mendenhall, Bears...
Quote : | "AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson failed a sobriety test while operating a 30-foot boat, then resisted arrest before being hit with pepper spray and dragged ashore by officers.
"When Benson did not pass the test, he presented himself as a threat to the officer and argued about whether or not he would be taken to land to have a follow-up field sobriety test performed on land and refused to put on a life jacket," the authority said in a statement.
The officer had to use pepper spray to subdue Benson. He then refused to leave the officer's boat and authorities had to drag him to a car to be taken to the Travis County jail, the authority said.
Benson has had legal problems before.
He was sentenced to eight days in jail in 2003 for a misdemeanor trespassing charge after forcing his way into an apartment to look for a reported stolen TV. In 2002, misdemeanor drug and alcohol charges against him were dropped." |
will the bears stand behind their criminal, or trade him to the patriots for a cold sandwich so he can run for 1500 yards when his suspension lets up in 2009?5/4/2008 4:01:44 PM |

The guy who kept making plays in the Friday afternoon practice was linebacker LeRue Rumph out of North Carolina State. One play he burst through the blocking and made a touch tackle in the backfield. The next segment, he was dropping into coverage and making an interception. Rumph was not drafted last weekend, after playing in 44 games for the Wolfpack. He got on the Chiefs radar screen because he played at Clearwater Central Catholic High School with Marcus Edwards, the team’s pro personnel assistant and son of the head coach. “He got himself on film,” Edwards said after the workout. “He made some plays. Now, he has to do it again.
