No. They actually have a history of not showing up to a lot of events they claim to be picketing.

They request police protection and a safe exit route at the places they protest. I suspect they are far less likely to show up when they don't get free protection services. I'd make them stand on their own two feet if I were Chapel Hill PD.

I have a feeling Chapel Hill wont be so liberal when these jackasses have their day in court.

I like how in our society the lowliest of scum and most non-productive members have the highest rate of fertility. No wonder our economy is going to hell. Hopefully with this guy behind bars we can at least stop him from making any more future thugs.

Some social theories theorize that the existence of so many wars throughout human history is due to this issue.

I was thinking about where the ATM was, where the body was, and where the car was and I'm almost certain that she was in the back seat with the other perp.

Both indicted.

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/2658138/

Quote :
"Hillsborough, N.C. — An Orange County grand jury on Monday indicted two men in connection with the shooting death of Eve Marie Carson, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's student body president.

Demario James Atwater, 21, and Laurence Alvin Lovette, 17, both of Durham, were each indicted on a charge of first-degree murder.

Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said a Rule 24 hearing is scheduled for May 5 to determine whether to pursue the death penalty against Atwater.

Woodall said he has not decided whether to try the case as a capital case but that state statute requires the hearing to be set 45 days from indictment.

Last week, a Durham County grand jury indicted Lovette on a murder charge in the Jan. 18 death of Abhijit Mahato, a 29-year-old Duke University graduate student.

Lovette is not eligible for the death penalty. A 2005 U.S. Supreme Court ruling prohibits the execution of anyone under 18 at the time of a crime. The harshest punishment he could face, if convicted of either crime, would be life in prison.

While responding to reports of gunfire, Chapel Hill police found Carson, 22, around 5 a.m. March 5 about a half-mile from the UNC campus. Her body was identified the next day. According to a stolen-vehicle report, she had been shot in the head."

Although on principal I'm opposed to the death penalty, I'm disappointed that Lovette isn't eligible. The upside is that maybe he'll figure some things out in prison and talk his kid out of being a complete waste of life like him.

^^ big deal. indicted = formally accused. a.k.a. they're not going to throw the case out before a trial...no shit, i think we pretty much knew that. i dont see how that warrants a big press release

Personally I always thought the death penalty seemed like an easy way out.. maybe it gets worse after they die, maybe it doesn't.. either way making them sit around in prison for the rest of their life seems worse to me.

So, basically I don't care if he isn't eligible for the death penalty

i agree, the death penalty is an easy way out and sitting in jail isn't much of a punishment, if only people could be eligible for the TORTURE PENALTY

that doesn't mean a lot. i don't think you were trying to imply that it did, but i just wanted to point that out since it got mentioned.

little personal experience just to show that indictment doesn't have to mean that evidence was found, or anything like that -- at least based on what happened to me, and the way i understand it:

misdemeanors can be tried in district court, because a judge can take the place of a jury on those and make a ruling... but in order to have a jury trial, it has to be heard in superior court. district court is essentially plea bargain court. superior court is where you have jury selection and all your motions and probable cause hearings and all that.

i had a felony charge pending in district court in wake county. i was offered a plea deal, but i refused because i wasn't guilty and i wanted a jury trial. so i ended up being indicted and got a new court date for a first appearance in superior court. i'm not sure if it was heard by an actual grand jury, or if they just sent down a complaint

but i'd imagine in a case like this, they would automatically transfer it to superior court, cause they know they won't be offering a plea deal (since he can't get the death penalty, they really have nothing to hold over his head to make him plead guilty)

i heard someone talking about indictments, and they thought it meant that it was based off a grand jury hearing some pretty good evidence. just wanted to point out that it doesn't necessarily mean that.

Yeah, I'm not confusing an indictment with a guilty verdict, we just hadn't had an update in a few weeks and I thought that I'd post it.

Quote :
"Eve Carson autopsy results won't be released now

Hillsborough, N.C. — The results of the autopsy performed on Eve Carson's body will temporarily remain under seal to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Superior Court Judge Allen Baddour ordered that the documents relating to the death of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president be sealed at the request of the District Attorney Jim Woodall.

Police found Carson, 22, dead near the UNC campus while responding to reports of gunfire. Authorities have never said exactly how she died. A stolen-vehicle report, however, indicated she was shot in the head.

In a motion to seal the report, Woodall said there are details about Carson's death that should remain confidential and that releasing the report could cause speculation about the significance of those details.

Several search warrants relating to the case are also under seal for similar reasons.

Demario James Atwater, 21, and Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr., 17, are each charged with first-degree murder in Carson's death,

Atwater could face the death penalty, and a hearing on the matter scheduled for May 5 has been rescheduled for July 7. Lovette is too young to be eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens postponed Atwater's hearing because the search warrants and autopsy report would have been discussed. He said it would be in the interest of justice to keep the information confidential for now."

those two fuckers should be summarily executed....well them and people like them. i bet they think they are straight gangsta for killing an unarmed innocent woman.

I saw a show once where they were interviewing some old mafia guy. He basically said "these kids today think they are gangsters, hell no. real gangsters were about making money sure, but we had honor. we lived by a code, we had respect. we were professional. we didnt target innocent people, kids, women and cops. these gangstas are just thugs"

i more or less agree with him

Those guys have street cred now! lol

That is the difference between your "gangs" crips/bloods/latin kings and actual mafia style organizations like the Italian or Russian mafia. I was told in Baltimore one of the safest areas was the italian district as the local "gangster" population stays clear b.c they know better than to be stirring trouble with the mafia is a good way to end up dead in a dumpster.

if they can give out 5 honorary doctorates, including this one:

< Jessye Norman, opera singer, recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award for classical music and honorary ambassador to the United Nations, who will receive a doctor of music degree.

then they better give her the degree posthumously...tell those who said it's not the right thing to do to shut the fuck up

A couple of updates:

Search warrants and autopsy results may be released in June or July

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/2923072/

Had Laurence Alvin Lovette been charged with burglary instead felonious breaking and entering after a Nov. 7 break-in he could have been in jail at the time of both murders.

there should have been questions about the communication of the two following the Duke Lacrosse case. There is going to be volumes of case studies written about the fuck ups in the durham criminal system. Kinda sad....

I'd love to hear whether she was targeted for a specific reason, or if they were just trying doors and hers happened to open. Maybe we'll find out when it goes to trial. Either way...just makes it seem so much worse than if she was abducted while away from home.

Updated version of the story from Twista's link: http://www.newsobserver.com/2811/story/1122357.html

It included this bit as well:

Quote :
"Furthermore, police tapped a cell phone call in which Atwater talked to an informant about his involvement in the crime, according to the documents.

The documents indicated that police investigated the possibility that Carson was sexually assaulted. However, District Attorney Jim Woodall said today that she was not sexually assaulted. "
