Quote : | "RALEIGH, N.C. -- J.J. Hickson held a teleconference with the media today to discuss his decision to enter the 2008 NBA Draft. Here is a sample of what Hickson had to say.
J.J. Hickson Profile You entered your name in the draft pretty early. Were you committed to staying in the draft all along or was there some in-decision there? I wasn't really committed. I just wanted to test the waters, and so far I feel personally I've been having good workouts. I feel like I've been having good workouts so I want to keep my name in.
What agent have you signed with and when did you sign with him? (ASM Sports) Andy Miller. I'm signing with him tomorrow.
What has been some of the feedback you've received from the scouts? Basically they've told me I have good potential, a good mindset, and I'm willing to learn and I'm very coachable. They told me I have a great NBA body.
Anything specifically they say you needed to work on? Not really, I'd probably say working on the mechanics of my jumpshot and extending my range.
Did coach Lowe go with you to workouts? How much did he help you with the process. No, not really. He just helped me as far as telling me to stay focused and keep my head up. If I'm having a bad workout just get through it and keep playing hard.
Did he do a lot of calling around to NBA sources? I don't know.
Can you talk about some of the things you can take from your one year at State? As far as on the court stuff, just knowing where to be on the floor. Coach Lowe did coach in the league so I think most of the sets that he ran were league sets. I kind of already got an introduction to a type of league offense... just basically knowing where to be on the court.
When did you actually decide to stay in the draft? It's been real recent. I'd say probably this last week. Like I said, I feel like I've been having good workouts, good enough for me to keep my name in.
What are you hearing regarding your draft position? Are you hearing lottery, top 20, first round? I'm not hearing anything. Like I said, it's just me personally, I feel like I've been having good workouts.
What went into the decision to not participate in the Orlando Pre-Draft Camp? Nothing really, I just felt like it would be better if I didn't go. I thought the situation would have been better for me to work out for teams and not go to Orlando.
Anything you didn't expect from the process? Not really, there's a lot of traveling, but I'll travel during the season so nothing really out of the ordinary.
Any one particular workout you remember as a breakthrough-type workout? Not really. I played hard in every last one of them, and I feel like I had a good showing in all of them. I feel I was pretty consistent.
It's a very exciting time for you. What do you hope this means for you and your family? It means a lot to me. My grandmother is proud of me, and she's full of joy right now.
What are some of the things you've been doing in the workouts? It's been a lot of individual things. A lot of spotup shooting, going through drills... towards the end of the workouts there's some one-on-one, two-on-two, and three-on-three.
Who are the teams you worked out for? Seattle, Portland, Denver, Sacramento, Phoenix, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Toronto.
Of those teams, is there one that's the best fit for you? I wouldn't say there is a best fit. I feel like I'd fit in good wherever I go. I feel like I'm going to have a positive influence on a team. I'm not going to bring any negative influence to them.
A lot of Atlanta players are talking about how much they've watched you. Can you tell a lot of players are considering NC State because of what you went through? I really don't know to tell you the truth. I feel like we had an okay, good first part of the year, and I feel like we kind of dropped off towards the end. It's up to the player whether he wants to go to NC State or not. " |

Quote : | "A Sign of a Down ACC? They May Not Have a Player Drafted in the First Round
You want another sign showing the decline of ACC basketball over the past few years? How about that the ACC had just one underclassman declare (and keep his name in) for the NBA Draft this season.
That guy is J.J. Hickson, and there is even a line of reasoning that NC State may be better without him.
There really were just a few really outstanding seniors leaving (Duke lost DeMarcus Nelson; Virginia lost Sean Singletary). There is a chance where the ACC will have no players taken in the first round of the draft (Hickson is the lone hopeful).
Typically, the ACC fills the draft up with all kinds of talent.
* Last year, three ACC players were lottery picks ... part of six total that were taken in the first round. * Three players went in the first round in 2006. * In 2005, seven players went in the first round. (five went in the lottery; three went in the top five). * In 2004, only Duke's Luol Deng was taken in the first round.
Remember, that was mostly when high school players also were in the draft, meaning less spots for colliegate players. So, what could the upcoming ACC season look like?
If you read articles all over the internets, you would assume that North Carolina will crush everyone on their way to a National Championship. That could happen, but that really is selling the ACC short. There are some really good teams who have high expectations as well.
Start with the Heels' rival, Duke. They'll return most of a squad that nearly won the ACC last year. Miami is loaded as well and could be a top ten team. As I said before, NC State could rectify chemistry issues now that Hickson is gone. Virginia Tech will be right there. There is a lot of talent at Florida State. Wake Forest started to turn things around last year and welcome in the late Skip Prosser's loaded 2008 class.
In fact, the ACC has done very well recruiting. According to Scout.com, Wake Forest brings in the #3 ranked recruiting class ... North Carolina is #5 ... Duke is #13 ... Florida State is #14.
The conference has done even better in 2009. Guys like John Henson (UNC), Mason Plumlee (Duke), Dexter Strickland (UNC), Milton Jennings (Clemson) and Leslie McDonald (UNC) will become household names (not to mention guys like Derrick Favors and Dante Taylor who are leaning toward ACC schools).
Nine of the top twelve scorers are returning. Five of the top seven rebounders. Seven of the top ten assist-men. Of the All-ACC teams last year (1st, 2nd and 3rd), 11 of the 15 players are coming back ... including three from the first team (Tyler Hansbrough, Tyrese Rice, Jack McClinton)." |

boozie, I'm not saying SLOW ball didn't win us games before. I made an effort not to take a shot at herb in that post because it wasn't warranted. I'm saying that Lowe is coaching players that were recruited for a different system. No matter how you slice that, its not a good situation.
Yes, Lowe can be criticized for recruiting Javi instead of Warren, losing chris wright, etc, but who is to say Warren even comes here? I'm not convinced it was a done deal that if we offer he comes.
My problem with the whole situation is that 2 years ago, Lowe was given god status by some of you people for that run he made. He was praised as a great "in game" coach for making adjustments, calling good timeouts, drawing plays that worked. Are you guys telling me that in a half of a season he became a dumbass? No. He's had one bad season that was plagued with injuries to key players (apparently costner too) and no depth.
I'm willing to give him a pass for last season to see how he can recruit and coach a full basketball team that signed up to play for him. Lets not forget that every other good coach, and a few bad ones turned us down.
And the WVU comparison with huggins is bullshit. They had talent in place with Nichols and Alexander being stars. Plus huggins is a piece of crap, and I wouldnt trade lowe for that slimeball if lowe went 0-35 for the next 10 years straight.
*edit* Might want to add that he's recruited 2 5* players, has a third that I feel is 95 percent, and has state in the top 3 for the #1 and #3 players in the country....regardless of position. (depending on which site) -not bad for a guy that sucks.

They were in the NIT the year before Huggins got there and had only 2 NCAA tourney appearances under Beilein. Alexander didn't do ANYTHING his freshman year, had a solid sophomore year, but was most certainly not a star until this past season. Beilein and Sendek are actually pretty similar coaches (Princeton offense), ran similar programs and achieved similar success (5 NCAA tourney appearances w/ 1 Sweet Sixteen compared to 2 NCAA tourney appearances w/ 1 Sweet Sixteen and 1 elite eight) so the comparison seems pretty valid to me. The fact of the matter is that GOOD coaches don't take 5 years to turn around a program (look at Wake Forest if you don't like the WVU example), and the program was not in THAT bad of shape to begin with. 1 last place finish in the conference and 1 10th place finish does not inspire much confidence (even with a run to the ACC title game which Sendek also achieved numerous times), and I for one and very scared about how bad next season could be.

I agree, but...
1) I don't think we're going to be as bad this year as we were last year. We're losing our best player, but we're adding basically 3 guards that didn't play last year (2 recruits and farnold). I think if we can penetrate and hit a few shots outside, McCauley, Smith, and Brandon will have a much easier time. I am 100 percent positive that our problems last year started with our guard play, so I say we have a respectable season and finish in the middle of the acc. (that wasn't the extent of our problem, but a damn good start)
2) You can't deny that he's working his ass off recruiting. If he lands one of Brown, Wall, or Favors, I'll say thats pretty good. I think CJ leslie is coming to State. Only way he doesn't is if we totally tank and fire Lowe.6/18/2008 5:29:27 PM |

wolfAApack don't forget that Johnny Thomas should be joining the team sometime around November or December according to most reports. if anything he'll give us depth at the SF position and maybe provide a rebounding spark for us off the bench. I really hope he comes back at full strength b/c he supposedly can jump out of the gym. Perhaps a redshirt year will be a good thing for him in the end. What exactly was his injury? So probably something like this, a small lesion on the articular cartilage.
http://www.orthspec.com/cartilage_sports_injuries.htm
I have to go to knee surgeries every now and then to collect tissue to take back to the lab so that I can culture cells. But those are usually total knee replacements. I've seen some pretty fucked up knee joints. Like some people will have areas the size of a half dollar on the medial side of their tibia where the cartilage has been worn away all the way down to the bone. Then some will have a flap of cartilage barely hanging on to their femoral condyles. 6/19/2008 1:39:08 PM |

they haven't said what kind of knee injury he has. He's been out of basketball for a year now and he's not even past the "light running" portion of his rehab. He may not make it back until 2009 if he makes it back at all. I'm not counting on him contributing until at least next year. Whatever it was it was a terrible injury. Makes you wonder if he didn't have some kind of structural defect before the injury. 6/20/2008 10:20:41 AM |

It only takes one team to like a guy but there is no way Hickson goes in the top 15 IMO.
I think he's a borderline 1st rounder. If I had to guess I'd say he goes ~26th.
Ultimately, its tough to tell anyone not to go if they project as a first rounder. In Hickson's case though I think he was a lottery pick with just one more year. Hard to ever say for sure but I think the consensus is that Hickson needed one more year.
Unless he's gotten a promise from someone at the end of the first round then this could be a very big mistake for him. 6/20/2008 10:42:54 AM |

I just looked at the draft order and saw the Spurs are 26th. Can't see them taking someone so raw with their window.
24th to the Sonics or 28th to the Grizzlies seem likely.

I think he has potential and he's drawing comparisons to Al Harrington as a guy who can take big guys outside and small guys inside.
He has amazing footwork in the post for a young guy but he is clueless when the defense collapses on him.
He can be a shot blocker/rebounder but I'm not sure he's old or mature enough to bang anytime soon.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's a 15-18 mpg guy 3 years from now but I'd be downright shocked if he is better than Leon Powe within the next three years.
He's got a steep learning curve, I think one more year in college would benefit his development more than a year on the pine. 6/20/2008 2:20:05 PM |

The Nets had targeted Westbrook, but are enthralled with Gallinari and will almost assuredly take him over Alexander, who also is a favorite of some in the front office. They’re still intrigued with the possibility of Brook Lopez here, too. Nevertheless, the Nets own the 10th and 21st picks and are eager to make some deals here, especially if that includes moving Richard Jefferson.
They’ve talked with Portland about sending the bad contract of Trenton Hassell and the 10th pick for the 13th pick and point guard Jarrett Jack. Portland believes it has better options to move its 13th pick, but Trail Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard could change his mind should he think he can get Alexander at No. 10.
The Nets are taking another look at Rider’s Jason Thompson, a fast riser on draft boards, in a workout on Wednesday. Nets president Rod Thorn has also been intrigued with Ohio State’s Kosta Koufus, sources say, but knows No. 10 is probably too high to take the 7-footer. Should the Nets move down to 13, Robin Lopez or Koufus could be the choice there.
At No. 21, the Nets could break San Antonio and New Orleans’ hearts and take Cal shooter Ryan Anderson or opt for J.J. Hickson.
The Nets are also eyeing enigmatic Memphis center Joey Dorsey at No. 40 of the second round to bring some inside muscle." |
