Ability to program my DVR from the web is neat. It's like DirecTV's, only they implemented it correctly. Unlike DirecTV, I don't have to hook an additional connection to the TV box in order to do it.

He raises a good point.
If its all IPTV due to the fact that their network supports all their users bandwidth needs simultaneously why don't they save DVR'd content in a C.O.?

Is anyone else having a hard time watching HD channels without crazy freezing?! In the last two weeks it has gotten absolutely ridiculous, to the point that I can't watch an hour-long program on an HD channel without several instances of freezing.
Should we call AT&T and complain!? Or has someone else already complained about it and gotten a response? 5/31/2009 6:27:55 PM |

So... since the gateway doubles as a router & switch, I was trying to set it up so my httpd server was accessible from the outside. Setup the port forwarding through the firewall just fine, and indeed everything works for the rest of the internet. All of you should be able to get to shatner.philihp.com.
However I can't. From what I gather, the gateway doesn't support loopback (or something along those lines). So when I resolve shatner.philihp.com, it resolves to my WAN IP, then I try to connect to it and I timeout. However if I connect to the LAN IP, http://192.168.1.99, it works just fine. It's similar to the problem this guy had with his FTP server.
Shaggy suggested that if I could get the DNS on the gateway to resolve the domain differently for LAN users, it would work. And it looks like from the manual, that there used to be a quazi-secret management console that had a "DNS Resolve" page for doing just this. However a recent firmware upgrade totally removed this in order to fix some XSS attack. So that's out of the picture.
this guy got around it by setting up a router behind his gateway... I suppose I could do this, but it seems like overkill for something that should just work.
Right now, my solution (which doesn't really scale) is just to add in a line to my /etc/hosts file for all of my machines to make the domain resolve to the LAN IP of the HTTP server, rather than the WAN IP. 5/31/2009 9:08:51 PM |

Can you disable the wireless on the gateway box and just run your current wireless router behind the gateway? I really don't want to try to reconfigure all of my static IP assignments and port forwarding settings in the new gateway. Can you even assign static IPs with the gateway?
UVerse is not in my neighborhood yet, but when they are I would like to switch to their internet service to get rid of TWC once and for all. 6/1/2009 8:09:22 AM |
evan All American 27701 Posts user info edit post |
^^strange. i just tried it as well on my end, and it resolves to my WAN IP.
have you looked at this? or is this the quasi-secret management console you were referring to? i haven't found another way to change the DNS that DHCP hands out on the router itself - i think your hosts file solution is as elegant as you're going to get without setting up another dnsmasq server or something. i do love that MDC page, though, especially for the diagnostic info and the resets you can do (like forcing it to retrain on your line). there's also another page that basically dumps EVERYTHING in the gateway's config files and logs into a JSON-like format - i can't remember where it is right now, but i can see many potential uses for it.
^ (and somewhat ^^): yes, you can disable the wireless. you can even stick your current router in the 2wire's DMZ so it basically just acts as a modem.
there are a few problems with this, however: 1) if your current router doesn't support passing multicast from the WAN interface, your STBs won't work (or, at the very least, they won't work consistently) 2) i'd be willing to say that all consumer routers (well, technically speaking, gateways) out there right now simply can't handle the traffic it takes to push iptv and do internet duties as well. the 2wire gateway has some sort of special firmware (or maybe an ASIC) that offloads the iptv stuff, apparently. i tried doing this with a damn linksys WRT600N that has a pretty beefy processor in it, and i still got dropped frames and pixellation all over the place on the STBs.
so, yeah. if you want to do this, you'd be wise to run two networks - one from the 2wire gateway that feeds your wireless router and your STBs, and another that feeds your computers from your wireless router.
the way i have it set up right now, my WRT600N just acts as a dumb access point. i use it for wireless instead of the 2wire gateway because it has 802.11n and will take external antennas without me cracking it open. all of the wireless clients get their DHCP leases from the 2wire gateway.
i don't understand what you're talking about when you say you're assigning static IPs in the router - are you talking about DHCP reservations? if so, i don't think there's a way to do that in the gateway, but you really have no need for them - the port forwarding settings on the 2wire gateway are tied to the MAC, not the IP. also, it's a whole lot easier to just use hostnames instead of IPs - i haven't found a way to change the domain name that dnsmasq uses for DHCP leases (i like using e00.lan, for instance), but all of your machines will receive (hostname).gateway.2wire.net as their hostname when they get a DHCP lease.] 6/1/2009 9:43:13 AM |
KRUZNBY All American 2655 Posts user info edit post |
^Good to know. I currently assign static IPs to each MAC address at home. Then I use that IP to run machines remotely within the network. It may not be the most efficient, but once I got it to work, I just kept doing it. It sounds like host names would work just as well with UVerse. 6/1/2009 9:52:55 PM |

A little old, but you can program DirecTV DVRs from the web/cell phone without any additional connections to the DVR, at least since I've had it. Now, the box does need a broadband internet connection to access most of their On Demand content. Lately they've been beaming down ~10 1080p On Demand movies to everyone with a DVR and storing them on your hard drive. These can be accessed without any internet connection as they are received during tuner downtime over the satellite.

Never seen UVerse TV in person, but most people online say DirecTV's HD picture quality is better due to a higher max bit rate on the MPEG4 streams (8Mbps vs. 10+). UVerse's (and pretty much everyone's) SD picture quality is better though, since DirecTV still uses bit starved MPEG2 streams for their SD broadcasts.
I've been pretty happy with DirecTV overall, especially since I installed their single wire system, and probably wouldn't switch to anything short of FiOS for TV.6/10/2009 1:07:06 PM |

I am considering At&T U-VERSE over TWC and roadrunner. Do I really need a box for every TV in the house. With Time warner you can still plug any TV in to the wall and get the regular channels (0-7X) , just not the digital cable channels. Am I missing something here? Quote : | "AT&T Rolls Out More U-verse Enhancements at No Additional Cost to Customers Upgrades Include Exclusive Total Home DVR Feature, Broadband Speed Increase, New On Demand App and More
Dallas, Texas, June 16, 2009
Since its launch three years ago, AT&T U-verseSM has continually evolved and added new features. This month, AT&T* will rollout another series of enhancements that make AT&T U-verse even better for customers. Today and over the coming weeks, AT&T U-verse will add — at no extra cost as part of customers’ existing subscriptions — upgraded DVR capabilities and user interface enhancements for all customers, increased downstream speeds for AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet Max residential and business customers, and a new On Demand Top Picks application for customers in select markets.
“Turning on the TV and seeing something new is what AT&T U-verse customers have come to expect from us,” said Jeff Weber, vice president of video services for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “These latest upgrades are further examples of how we’re using Internet Protocol (IP) technology to give you more control and more value. With AT&T U-verse, you’re getting DVR capabilities you can’t find from any cable providers, exciting and useful apps, and faster broadband speeds. We’re giving you an advanced entertainment experience, and this is still only the beginning.”
The U-verse enhancements announced today include:
Exclusive new AT&T U-verse Total Home DVR feature. AT&T U-verse Total Home DVR capabilities will be expanded market-by-market in the upcoming weeks to add the ability to schedule and manage recordings from any U-verse receiver — a feature exclusive to AT&T among multi-room DVRs. The feature adds even more convenience and control over recorded shows by allowing customers to set or delete recordings from any room in their home, instead of from the DVR receiver room only. The enhancement follows the launch of Total Home DVR in 2008, which allows all U-verse DVR customers to watch standard and High Definition recorded shows on up to eight connected TVs in the home — all from a single DVR.
Free speed increase for AT&T U-verse Internet Max customers. All AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet Max customers have been given increased downstream speeds from up to 10 Mbps to up to 12 Mbps — a 20 percent increase in speed at no extra cost. The faster up to 12 Mbps downstream speed is available to all new and existing U-verse Internet residential and business customers who subscribe to the Max service.
New On Demand Top Picks application. U-verse TV movie buffs will also have a new way to find that perfect movie with On Demand Top Picks. The new application will enable U-verse TV customers to view On Demand recommendations based on their past video rental history and view a list of the top ten On Demand titles U-verse TV customers are renting. The app will also give customers the ability to rate a movie they have previously rented, which will be averaged into other U-verse TV customer ratings and displayed next to the title in the On Demand recommendations list. On Demand Top Picks will be available to customers in Los Angeles, Cleveland, Hartford, St. Louis, Atlanta, Sacramento, San Antonio and Austin within the next few weeks. AT&T plans to make the app available to all U-verse TV customers next year.
Web Remote Access to DVR enhancements. U-verse TV customers will soon have a new interface to schedule and manage their DVR recordings from any web-connected PC. Powered by Yahoo!, the enhanced functionality enables faster browsing of the program guide; sorting the program guide by genre, favorites or High Definition (HD) channels; easily referencing recently recorded shows and upcoming scheduled shows on a side panel; targeted searching by title, actor, and channel; and personalizing favorite channels. U-verse TV customers will also be able to utilize sub accounts — in addition to their U-verse master account login — to access this app. AT&T was one of the first providers to introduce online DVR control in November 2006, and brought three-screen DVR access to all U-verse TV customers with Mobile Remote Access to the DVR in April 2007. On average, more than 100,000 U-verse TV customers use Web Remote Access every month to schedule and manage their recordings.
U-verse TV navigation improvements. U-verse TV customers will have a more simple and streamlined way to navigate and find programming with enhancements rolling out market-by-market along with the Total Home DVR upgrade. From within the U-verse programming guide, users will be able to select Enter to pull up a panel of options to jump to another channel, time or day to find the programming you want to watch. Customers will also be able to select Enter while watching live TV to bring up a side panel that allows them to select from zoom and audio options.
Free movie month. As an added bonus, all U-verse TV customers will get even more options for their summer entertainment with unlimited access to Starz at no extra charge during July.
These upgrades are the latest examples of standard AT&T U-verse services and applications that give customers more freedom and flexibility over their entertainment experience. U-verse TV customers can also enjoy several other integrated applications, including personalized, on-screen weather, sports, traffic and stock information via AT&T U-bar; local and national weather forecasts on-demand; the ability to view personal photos on your TV that you have uploaded to flickr.com; remote access to the DVR from any web-connected PC or wireless phone; and more.
AT&T’s U-verse deployment is rapidly introducing competitive choice and next-generation services to more consumers. AT&T U-verse customers enjoy quadruple-play integration, enhanced features and greater value, all made possible by IP technology. AT&T U-verse TV ranked “Highest in Residential Television Service Satisfaction in the North Central, South, and West Regions,” according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Residential Television Service Provider Satisfaction StudySM." |
