I really think Sweetwater 420 is overrated. It's ok. I once was trying to buy a Carolina Pale Ale (IIRC), and the girl was like "OMFG, EVERYONE LOVES THE SWEETWATER 420." She even had me sample both and have me compare, and I preferred the Carolina Pale Ale. Unfortunately, the tap went dry and I ended up with Sweetwater 420 anyway. 4/5/2010 11:21:58 PM |

i would definitely choose a few other beers on tap before i'd choose a 420. i don't LOVE it. but i have become a fan of the blueberry/blackberry beers lately....so i wanna try the SW Blue. 4/5/2010 11:23:57 PM |

I have had the Magic Hat Hefeweizen. I need to try the #9. I think those are the only 2 I'll actually like though. 4/6/2010 8:36:55 AM |

* #9 – Not Quite Pale Ale, a tasty apricot Pale Ale * Lucky Kat, Magic Hat’s IPA * Vinyl, the self-described Scrumptious Spring Lager, and I agree * Odd Notion (spring ‘10 version), “cross-pollinates the classic American Wheat beer with an American Pale Ale.” 4/6/2010 2:49:46 PM |

I was never a big fan of Lucky Kat, though it's certainly better than Circus Boy (which tastes like lemon soap). Vinyl is pretty tasty though. Overall, you should have gone with a Troegs or Great Lakes mixed 12 pack. 4/6/2010 2:52:30 PM |

honestly, i got it b/c the gf was coming into town and likes the #9
i was bored with all the others
i hadnt really given treogs much of a chance, it's (somewhat) local, and the people here dont talk about it like they do other local brews
after looking through their profile on beer advocate, it's next on my list, although i dont buy beer much any more 4/6/2010 2:54:46 PM |

All the Troegs stuff I've had has been really solid (and generally pretty reasonable pricewise), the Hopback Amber and Sunshine Pils are the best out of their regular lineup.4/6/2010 2:59:13 PM |

420 is my favorite beer currently
if nothing else looks good to me at HT then i'll just pick up a 6 pack and be happy
i think they should sponsor me or something since every party or bar i go to i am drinking it (i guess that isn't too often anymore) 4/6/2010 3:01:13 PM |

Anyone try the Rogue's Chatoe line yet? I had the Single Malt Ale this weekend and it was great. Absolutely delicious, smooth, tasty.

^I wanted to try the fresh hop one, but it seemed like we got it way after the hop harvest so I was iffy about buying it. The black lager didn't have a ton of appeal to me, but the single malt thing is interesting. 4/6/2010 3:05:41 PM |

Couple of things...
got my package from Sierra Nevada...I ordered a few pint glasses, shirt, and their 30th annv. snifter. I'm a little disappointed in the snifter's quality as it's pretty thin and feeble. We'll see how long it stands up.
Tried a couple new beers last night. 1. Avery Maharajah, the DIPA entry in their emperor line of beers. Great aroma and a surprisingly smooth finish. I must be a hop head because a few around me were commenting about how it was a tough one to finish and I had mine and was on to the next before they finished #1.
2. Ballast Point Calico Amber Ale. Ballast Point is a new one to me. It's a San Diego brewery and this was the first time i'd ever heard of it. I picked the amber ale after it was recommended by the beer goddess i trust the most. It was pretty damn good, and a great change of pace after two big DIPAS. I have yet to see them in stores, but keep your eyes peeled.
That being said, i'm making another pilgrimage to the beer store tomorrow. Will post my bounty when i return home.
Tonight....a sam adams summer ale for now, perhaps a few bigfoots or the 30th annv. stout. 4/8/2010 6:48:48 PM |

ballast point is excellent -- their double ipa (dorado) is probably my favorite beer
i don't love their standard lineup (yellowtail/calico/big eye/etc) as much, but they make some fantastic seasonal releases -- i think they just released a batch of sculpin ipa which is amazing (sadly they haven't made dorado in what feels like forever)
and if you're not exclusively a hophead, the sea monster stout and victory at sea porter are excellent too
great to see they've kicked up their distribution outside of socal 4/8/2010 7:08:30 PM |

i didn't make it to Total Wine (mainly cuz I didn't wanna spend $60 on beer) so i brought home from the Teeter a 6pk of Hell's Belle, a 6pk of Sam Adam's Blackberry Witbier (my new fruity fave), and a 4pk of Sam Adam's Imperial White.

I rarely ever get the make your own six packs and i remember why now. I made a six pack of stuff from mendecino brewing and all of my Red Tail Ales had a bland slightly skunk flavor to them. Definitely not the way it's supposed to taste. Will not do that anymore.
thank god the Ballast Point Calico is fresh 4/11/2010 3:37:59 PM |
armorfrsleep All American 7289 Posts user info edit post |
^the problem is not the mixed six pack, it's that you chose Mendocino beers which are all pretty bad with the exception of their Imperial IPA. 4/11/2010 3:46:34 PM |
