My theory is that the dad lost his balloon, he made up the story about his kid being inside it because he just wanted it tracked down and found, and he didn't realize the shitstorm that would start up because of it.

dude, did you guys not see the interview with the family afterwards?? The reporter asked the kid why he hid in the attic and didnt come out when they were calling his name. The kid said to the dad, "cause you told me it was for the show". The parents planned the whole thing. I bet the kid got his ass kicked afterwards for spilling the beans.
