I didn't even think about having a penalty coach. Couldn't hurt, right? Especially if it were a legend like Le Tissier.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/dec/08/matthew-le-tissier-england
I did have a question though, which maybe our resident tww Three Lions expert can opine on. I always thought there were bad vibes with Le Tissier and the FA after he was continuously overlooked when squads were picked. Is that not right?
Oh and let's get some goal highlights in here just for the hell of it. That 2nd is so sick

For those of you with iPhones, there is now a World Cup 2010 app thats free. I think its made by ESPN so it probably would end up sucking since ESPN knowledge of soccer is embarrassing. I sure hope they don't bring back that stupid bitch they had commentating last world cup. 12/9/2009 11:13:21 AM |

ESPN got Martin Tyler to do the announcing this time around, thankfully. Just DVR the games and fast forward through Foudy, Lalas, turds, et al. during pre/post game and halftime. 12/9/2009 1:02:43 PM |

She didn't get on there by winning a beauty contest. She's one of the most capped USWNT players of all-time and one of their ex-captains.
I'm no fan of hers by any means, but I will say that 1) she's gotten a lot better since she first started and 2) her analysis is typically better than that of Lalas. I think she's tolerable if they limit her to US stuff - men's and women's national teams and MLS. 12/9/2009 5:28:30 PM |

But that means nothing to me. If she's going to be an uninformed female...she needs to make up for it in appearance. Or as you said, stick her with the MLS or US related stuff since I know I won't have to hear her crap again in that case.12/9/2009 6:20:56 PM |

Well believe it or not, there are actually people who care about women's soccer (I am certainly not one of them) and there's amazingly a lot of crossover with the US men's and women's team fans. Lalas isn't on there because he's insightful. He's on there because pretty much everybody that follows US Soccer knows who the hell he is. Same for Foudy. 12/9/2009 6:57:10 PM |

And that's the problem right there. Why are they giving jobs to ex-soccer players just because they played the game? I would take anyone with a broadcasting background that has an above average knowledge of the sport over these ridiculous circus clowns. You don't need to have played the sport on the top level to talk about it.
Martin Tyler never played in a professional league and you don't hear anybody complaining about him.
And don't tell me the star-power of Alexi Lalas is pulling interest. Nobody gives a shit about that never-was. 12/9/2009 7:45:56 PM |

I think ESPN still has that "we can't throw a bunch of foreigners on our programming and expect our American audience to relate to them" mentality. They're slowly getting better about it, but it's still there.
I think the Lalas/Foudy hate is a bit overblown too. Pre-game/halftime is mostly just filler bullshit anyways. I do just fine during EPL broadcasts when they start the game with lineups and that's it and then it's bullshit from Warren Baron and that other dude at halftime until they come back right when the second half is starting.
The key is getting good people to do commentary and they're obviously trying to do that. They got rid of O'Brien and they're giving us guys like Gray, Tyler, Rae, and Healey instead. Dellacamera/Harkes is perfectly fine for US games. Now all we need is Ray Hudson and we'll be good to go.
some Ray Hudson gems (warning: he has a monster boner for Riquelme) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS6Np-g_h5w

The only result I can now predict is a slaying of Algeria by England due to locker room bulletin board material.
To Bougherra's defense, I think he could have been referring to the United States' play and just confused them with England. I've seen more heart at pick up games than I've seen in some of our matches.
Anything Bougherra says should probably be ignored anyway; he plays for Rangers.
Hoops for life, sons.
EDIT:
LOL. Turns out this dude is French born. I'm not exactly sure about all this so called talent that he claims Algeria has, being that he was obviously not talented enough to play for Les Bleus.

england will destory algeria. this is a completely different team than that of the last few managers. capello has turned this team dangerous.

zidane was algerian born or had algerian parents and was born in france, i cant remember. but yet, most algerian players were born in france, but theres no way they could make the french squad. For some reason I thought Marouane Chamakh was on Algeria, but it turns out hes from Morocco. 12/15/2009 12:07:27 PM |
