We're coming to the defense of the first fucking amendment. This isn't some Westboro Baptist protest. This is a place of worship.

The legal argument has been settled like nine pages ago.

I'm arguing that it shouldn't be an issue of *any* sort unless you're stupid or have a deep sense of sympathy towards stupid people.

^^You've already made up your mind, as have a lot of the other people in this thread. Anyone that could possibly be against building this mosque, or any mosque, is a stupid racist.

Sometimes, you need to take a step back and realize how ignorant you sound.

Except that he's not a right-wing fundamentalist. Your evidence for this is as follows:

-His father hung with fundamentalists. Whoop-dee-doo.
-He doesn't like Israel. Neither do I. Neither does anyone else save for Israelis and American right-wing fundamentalists.
-He's said things that could totally be taken out of context by borderline-illiterate people to mean that he wants to impose sharia law on America.

I'm supporting this guy and his mosque specifically because it's clear that he isn't a right-wing fundamentalist. You should, too.

He's as much a fundamentalist as your hated southern baptists are.

just because he doesn't explicitly support suicide bombing doesn't mean he's not a fundamentalist... That's more of a commentary on islam, if that's how you're defining muslim fundamentalist.

While I'm waiting on that:

He's being sent by the State Department to promote the US and religious tolerance in the Middle East:

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ijPxKmwGVxOVZvDFCYSiBLyPIaJAD9HGRB980

Here's the description of his book:

"Focused on finding solutions, not on determining fault, this is ultimately a hopeful, inspiring book. What's Right with Islam systematically lays out the reasons for the current dissonance between these cultures and offers a foundation and plan for improved relations. Wide-ranging in scope, What's Right with Islam elaborates in satisfying detail a vision for a Muslim world that can eventually embrace its own distinctive forms of democracy and capitalism, aspiring to a new Cordoba - a time when Jews, Christians, Muslims, and all other faith traditions will live together in peace and prosperity."

But deep down inside he's a islamofascist, right?

The information you claim to desire is available at your fingertips. I see no reason to do your legwork.

If his explicit refusal to condemn Hamas isn't enough to convince you, then I guess it doesn't really matter what I would post.

Quote :
" In one of the wackier ideas to come from the debates surrounding the mosque near Ground Zero, a cable-TV host says he wants to erect a gay bar for Muslims near the proposed house of worship.

"It is an effort to break down barriers and reduce deadly homophobia in the Islamic world," Greg Gutfeld, of Fox News' "Red Eye," wrote on his blog.

"I hope that the mosque owners will be as open to the bar as I am to the new mosque."

Reps for the Islamic center, proposed for Park Place, said on Twitter, "We're open to dialog [sic], just not shenanigans.""

Greg with the equivocation yet again. Lovely.

How about dangerous homophobia among right-wing Christians in this country? Maybe every religious institution should have an adjoining gay bar. Then the republicans would have somewhere to go every day of the week rather than just Wednesday and Sunday.

Could we get a clear and complete answer on the funding source(s) for the mosque in question? Just asking.

And there's this:

A Muslim Questions the Mosque
Asra Q. Nomani
Aug. 10, 2010

Quote :
"There is a war raging in the world today, not just between America and radical Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq, but within Islam itself. The two mosques—one a dream, the other a reality—belong, on paper at least, in the same neighborhood—blocks apart, and just blocks from where the World Trade Center once stood. Yet, the worlds represented by these two mosques could not be further apart."

Quote :
"In the name of political correctness, too many inside our Muslim community have been apologists for Islam, feeling defensive, but not being as brutally honest as the world needs us to be about this problem."

Quote :
"The Tea Party activists actually express the sentiments of Muslims such as myself who believe we have a serious problem inside our Muslim communities.

I may not share their political language but I believe their fears are legitimate. And for those who disagree, I have just two words: Faisal Shahzad, the alleged would-be Times Square bomber.

Liberal and progressive Americans and their organizations have dropped the ball in having a nuanced, intelligent critique of extremist Islamic ideology, currying pluralism points instead in the name of interfaith relations.

In their PR campaign to defend the name of Islam, mainstream American Muslim organizations such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations have failed to acknowledge there is an interpretation of Islam that preaches violent jihad against the West. Their mantra has become this: 'Islam is a religion of peace,' and they try to explain away men such as the alleged Fort Hood gunman, Major Nidal Hassan, by saying, 'He isn't Muslim.' Now they are jumping onto the Ground Zero bandwagon in the name of religious freedom."

Quote :
"We need an expression of institutional Islam that is moderate, progressive and liberal. We don't have it yet. There is only one mosque in America where women can pray in the front row. It's in Toledo, Ohio."

Quote :
"The right inside the Muslim community and outside has defined and controlled the debate. It's time that all of us find the spiritual courage to ditch the demonizing, on the one side, and the apologizing, on the other side."

I think some people want the government to stop it, but I think most people understand that you cannot circumvent the Constitution on a whim. I think the protests and demonstrations are targeted more at the organization itself, with the intent on putting pressure on them from a PR standpoint.

Maybe I should explain myself. I'm not saying it's impossible for Muslims to worship in peace because they're Muslims. I'm saying the very definition of a religious organization precludes any level of worship that will not affect people that don't share their faith.

The great "Ground Zero mosque" hoax

Quote :
"If you take a minute to Google map the address of the supposed "ground zero" mosque, 45-47 Park Place, you'll find the proposed site is on a small city street buried in the middle of the block. It is separated by two full city blocks of towering buildings from the World Trade Center site. While the entire lower Manhattan might be considered "Ground Zero", the site of the mosque is separated visually and physically from the World Trade Center site. No one visiting the World Trade Center site will see it - unless they take a wrong turn on the way.

I searched "45 park place new york ny" in Google Maps. That doesn't look like a site for a "Ground Zero Mosque" to me. It's just going to be a building a couple blocks away. You can see it's not even within view of the subway station. I have been to the old WTC site via the subway stop and I don't see this "interfering" with the potential tourism.

Another example of people freaking out about crap based on media hype.

http://www.in.com/videos/watchvideo-the-daily-show-municipal-landuse-hearing-update-9146735.html

The Daily Show did a good bit that points out that how it's not just because the mosque is "near" ground zero that's the problem, it's general religious-fascism that's driving the opponents of the mosque.

the second part of the segment
http://www.in.com/videos/watchvideo-the-daily-show-municipal-landuse-update-ground-zero-mosque-9146729.html

Apparently there's been a mosque 4 blocks from ground zero for the past 40 years. Which is inside of the 5 block radius that the Republican pundits were prescribing for their Constitution-free zone around the WTC site.

"
A former senior Bush aide, chief speechwriter Michael Gerson, told POLITICO last night that he supports Obama's decision.

"An enormously complex and emotional issue -- but ultimately the right thing to do," Gerson said. "A president is president for every citizen, including every Muslim citizen. Obama is correct that the way to marginalize radicalism is to respect the best traditions of Islam and protect the religious liberty of Muslim Americans. It is radicals who imagine an American war on Islam. But our conflict is with the radicals alone.""
